For the metrically challenged. Did an 800 mile round trip. Average on the
return leg was 60mph. Saw about 140mph in the wrx.

eh? We did non-stop from Wycombe to Ancona, 1100 miles in 18 hours. In a
leaking 1100cc convertible three wheeler, in the rain
with one wiper, no stereo and no heater. Rarely dropped below 70mph when we
weren't stopped at services.

We were also officially fucked when we arrived :-)

Jesus, I hope there were at least two drivers. I do that drive (and a
bit further) several times a year and I'm not mad enough to do it in one
eighteen hour slog, even with two drivers. A day's drive gets you as far
as Como/Milan if one is taking reasonable breaks. Nowadays I don't even
push it that far and I tend to stop somewhere in Switzerland on the
first day then drive the rest of the way the next day.

After all, you don't want to kill someone, especially if the someone
turns out to be you or someone you know.

Yes, there were two drivers. No room for any more :-) We also had to stop
every 120-140 miles as the tank only held 3.5 Galls. That slowed us down a
bit, but made sure we moved , drank, ate and swapped drivers a lot. Didn't
even feel tired until we got to Ancona, then got lost looking for the hotel.
For some reason, having your arse 6 inches from the ground, straight through
exhaust and pure fear in Italian traffic kept us wide awake:0

Hell, that's impressive Ancona is a one horse town. We visit the garden
centre and Ikea there fairly regularly. I don't even bother to turn the
satnav on because 20 minutes of zig-zagging will let you see everything
there is to see.

There's an excellent film made on location in Ancona:

I bottled out when I remebered what a car looks like when it hits a roo. Saw
115mph on the bike which is fairly scary on an unfaired bike.
