Default 02 Malibu no start - 06-20-2007 , 07:55 AM

No start
Installed new battery
Start first try
Later that day, no start
Start with boost
Had alternator tested at shop and showed perfect

No lights on dash

I'm puzzled
its a 02 malibu v6

get an ammeter, and hook it up to the batter cables with the key off. You
may have something drawing power.

Sounds like 'Passlock' system. Try turn on ignition, don't crank, leave on
for 10 minutes, turn off, try start.
There should be a 'Theft System' light on if the Passlock
is (mal)functioning.

I never thought of that.......but will try.
In the meantime, if you are correct, wouldn't it still NOT start with a
boost?.....because it did.

I think Micheal's suggestion regarding a draw on the battery should be
checked. I'm guessing that there will be some (normal) small draw in the
milliamp range, but someone will have the spec for that.

If it starts with a boost and there were no lights on the dash, as you've
indicated, then I doubt it's the passlock. On my 2000 when the passlock
acts up the car turns over but doesn't fire.

ty
will check both
In the meantime, I had a 2000 Focus (gringes) and the passlock acted up, and
the car would not start at all.

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that on the 2000,
when the passlock fails it cuts the fuel off, but everything else still
works. Car turns over, lights come on, etc.

Others mention that the passlock causes crank, but no start, and also the
'Theft System' light comes on.
That's correct.
I was thinking the battery replacement caused a computer reset of sorts and
allowed a start.
But a start with a boost, almost makes me think there's something wrong with
the cable connectors. I had a friend car wouldn't start, volt meter showed
good volts at posts, no volts touching the two cables. There was deposit on
the inside of a cable connector, cleaned off scraping with a knife, and car
started.

Others correct, passlock causes crank, no start, disabled fuel system.
It sounds like the battery cable connector may have deposits on it. Take
cables off and clean with wire brush/knife.
