Default 2000 Malibu theft system - 02-03-2007 , 04:48 PM

Hi: Not sure if anyone's encountered this problem or not.

Our 2000 Malibu has in intermittent problem with the theft deterrence
system. Car starts and runs well but occasionally the theft system engages
and we have to spend the 15 or so minutes turning the key, etc. to clear it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

After having been told to do so by a GM mechanic, if you don't attempt to
state the car for ten minutes or so the theft system will "re-set". Perhaps
it was just a coincidence but I did it and it worked.

My 1998 Malibu does the same thing. Apparently this is an issue with the
sensor that reads the resistor on the key, that is located inside the
ignition switch. When this happens, just remove the key and wait 10 minutes
for the Theft light to stop flashing. Once it shuts off, you are good to go
again.

Fortunately on my own car, this usually only happens very rarely, although
when it does, it can be frustrating.

Passlock sensor in the ignition switch cylinder is going. It's a known issue
and easy to replace it. Part was about $85 at the dealer. I've done both the
'01 & '02 'bu's in the family fleet.
