Default 2000 Malibu turn signal problem - 07-02-2006 , 09:25 PM

Left and right blinkers stopped working after working intermittently.
Precipitating event appears to have been driving on flooded roads. Any
obvious cause/cure?

Thanks.

Call dealer with your vin and see if your/s had the recall on the
hazard switch done? If not, that is probably your issue.

Thank you for the info, I did not know there was a recall. The hazard
switch appears to be involved, because the problem cleared up after I
switched the hazard warning on and off.

There is a "non-recall" recall that covers this problem on some Malibus -
I'm sure your model year is included. In December of 2004, I received
a letter from GM re: my 2000 Classic. The letter stated that "some 2000
model year Chevrolet Classic vehicles may have a condition where the turn
signal/hazard warning flashers become inoperative." How's that for saying
there's a problem??

Anyway, GM has extended the warranty for this problem to 10 years or 150,000
miles from the date that your vehicle was originally placed in service,
whichever occurs first. If you have any questions, it recommends that you
call the Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center between 8:00 AM and 11:00 PM
EST, Monday through Friday at 1-800-630-2438. Good luck.

Doug

BTW - When I took my car in to have the repair done, the service writer
played dumb. Don't let them BS you.

Sure has been recalled. I think 2002 on is the silent recall. I got a
letter for my 2002. I'd already had the switch replaced by a dealer and
was reimbursed not long after submitting the documents.

Recalls Summary

Make / Models : Model/Build Years:
CHEVROLET / MALIBU 2000-2001

OLDSMOBILE / ALERO 2000-2001

PONTIAC / GRAND AM 2000-2001

Type: ANY
Recall Number: 03V327000
Summary:
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE HAZARD WARNING SWITCHES THAT MAY
EXPERIENCE SOLDER JOINT CRACKING CAUSED BY RAPID TEMPERATURE
TRANSITIONS AND THE SOLDERING PROCESS. IF SOLDER JOINT CRACKING OCCURS
AND RESULTS IN AN OPEN CIRCUIT, THE TURN SIGNALS/HAZARD LAMPS BECOME
INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE.
Consequence:
WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS ARE INOPERATIVE, THE DRIVER CANNOT USE THEM TO
SIGNAL INTENT TO TURN THAT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HAZARD WARNING SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION
BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT
1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, OR OLDSMOBILE AT
1-800-630-6537.

I'm in Canada and I got mine replace on recall for the 2002 ... all it took
was a call to GM Canada and told them the problem and gave them a vin number
.... it took all 2 - 3 days to get a appointment and only about 1/2 hr in the
service department to get it fix...

Haven't had a problem with signal lights since :-)
