Default 2006 Malibu Maxx Electric Power Steering - 07-03-2007 , 02:05 PM

I have read other posts where the writers had problems with their
power steering. It freaked me out the otherday when after starting
the car I proceeded to drive out the driveway when the electric power
steering went off. he message on the info board on the dash just said
problem with power steering. I was able to back up and park the
vehicle. Called Onstar and had them do a diagnostic and found no
problems. Left the car and being a weekend could not get any help.

My husband jumps in on Monday morn (tuesday actually - long weekend)
starts up the car and drives it to the dealer with absolutely no
problems. I have read that it resets itself. Can this happen while
driving on the highway as I can see this a being potentially
dangerous? Should I be scared and worried? The dealer did nothing to
the car as basically there was nothing to do.

Alot of electrical/electronical glitches actually fix themselves.

Shut the vehicle off, wait about 5 minutes, if it still exists, then go to
the dealer

If it resets, go about your marry life.

Loosing powersteering is annoying regardless how its done. You can still
drive without it, just use your muscles.

This happened to my wife, while driving our 2004 Malibu. She picked me up
from work and was driving us home. Out of no where the power steering just
turned off and the DIC displayed the same message.

We do not have OnStar, but I did take it to the dealership once I dropped
her off at home. This was the start of my steering column troubles. The
dealership ended up replacing the steering column. That was the last time I
had troubles with the power steering though. The other times the steering
column and steering rack were replaced, had to do with a thumping sound.
when turning.

The thumping while turning the steering wheel is due to a lack of
grease where the steering shaft meets the rack. This does not require
any parts replacements. Instead of applying a little grease, the
dealer ripped off GM and inconvenienced you so they could make a few
bucks. My dealer did the same to me.
