Default 98 Malibu - AC/HeatingFan cutting out intermittently - 03-16-2007 , 10:19 PM

All of a sudden, the fan on my AC/heat is randomly stopping then
turning itself back on. It doesn't matter what the setting is and
there doesn't seem to be any reason for it to turn on or off. Any
advice would be appreciated.

Similarly, a 98 Malibu I just picked up, has an intermittent issue w/ the
heater fan. The sounds very weak and a little noisy, then its cuts off.
If I tap the side of the console, then it will come back on for a brief
moment.
So my question is while we are on this topic is, does it sound like my
heater fan needs replacing? If so, how do I install it?

Thanks

If you tap on the "side of the console" what are you vibrating when you tap
there?

If your tapping around the fan then that's got a fault in it.
If your tapping around the switch then the switch is faulty.

Tapping on right side of console.
Something tells me if I tapped and it came on but just blowing light heat
and the blower making a little noise, it could be the blower.
I'm not convinced the tapping would trigger the switch to work.

General rule of thumb. Electrical devices either work or they don't. IF
you tapped on the light bulb in your bathroom and it came on then you tapped
on it again and it shut off I'd hope you wouldn't be running down the
basement breaker panel to check if the breakers working. I had the dealer
replace the fan motor in my 2000 malibu under warranty because it was noisy.

I still don't know which console you're tapping on but whatever. If you
think it's the fan blower then put one in.

yep after thorough research, it appears the malibu's are famous for faulty
fan motors in the heater.
thanks

The most common problem for heat/ac fans is the resistor block that controls
fan speeds. This is item #1 to check in any car for blower problems.
