Default ABS LIGHT - 04-05-2005 , 10:38 AM

I have a 99 chevy malibu, and I would say it has about 108k miles on
it. I have changed my brakes etc. But the ABS light will not turn off.
At times it skips when I break. I find it strange. What could possibly
be the problem? Would anyone know??

The wheel speed sensor might not work properly. Or battery too low, check
and clean all of battery terminals.

I think it might just be a computer chip glitch. I have had the
warning lights for the abs, my radiator etc come on for awhile and then
go off for awhile. No actual problem as far as I can tell. I currently
have 227,000 miles on my 97.

Not that you may not have a problem. Just make sure you really do
before you tell someone to fix it, because they may very well charge
you for the abs job and then a few weeks later, the light comes on
again.

Thanks for all the info, we can not seem to find the sensor. Could you
possibly tell me where it is??

Thanks

That's quite a lotta miles. How's the car been over this number of
miles? How does it run now, still original engine?

Just trying to find out what I may have in store for me over the next
few years. Good to see your car lasted a good number of miles.

Sorry, I don't know where the sensor is, unfortunately.

Same engine, I just get the oil changed regularly etc. A lot of my
miles are highway miles. Maybe sixty percent at 55-70mph.

Also, I have ignored some of the problems, such as the warning lights
which I think are just malfunctioning. I went through the abs light
repair cycle and just kind of figured it out. Also had several
problems with the security system not allowing me to start the car.
Suspension system has been weak but only repaired it once, now I'm just
living with the creaks and groans. The a/c has also been a pain. It
works but not on all settings. All these problems have apparently been
shared by lots and lots of other Malibu owners.

The biggest problem has been the brakes wearing out. Finally I got
some aftermarket brakes, about two and half years ago. They were
wonderful. Unfortunately I could not find the folder I put the
receipts in so that when I needed new brakes I couldn't remember where
they came from. Couldn't find a bookmark!!! : ( I did the research
online and asked my wife to buy them for me as she does online
purchasing all the time. They lasted longer than any brakes I've ever
had on any car and I have had lots of cars. So I went to the dealer
and asked, do you have better brakes than oem? They said oh yeah, much
better.

Well about 20,000 miles later my rotor is warped. This time I'm
getting Duralasts from AutoZone. . .that is based on the recommendation
from someone on this newsgroup.

I would never recommend anyone buying a gm product at this point. I
really like driving my car but the mechanical problems have been
annoying and expensive. It doesn't seem that gm did anything to remedy
these problems over the life cycle of the car.

Good luck with yours.

My AC started turning off and on by itself, but to be honest I have
ignored it it has been like this for about two years to be honest.
Knock on wood hopefully it will not go out this summer. As far as the
break light goes, it really sucks cause my inspection sticker is due!
For sure it will not pass, There has to be a way to turn it off. Well
if there’s a fix I will most definatly post! good luck to all and
thanks for the replys

I concur with the speed sensor thing. My ABS goes off sometimes when I am
backing up or if I have the wheel turned to the left when I am braking
slowly.

The dealer diagnosed it as the left front speed sensor that will
intermittently be left in the open position. That'll cost me about $450.

So I just turn the car off and on and the ABS light resets. If yours stays
on, then it might be both sensors or a really toasted one.

I know this post may be late but I am new here. If you take the wheel
off and look in back of the caliper and rotor you will see the abs
sensor hookup. It maybe white the one I replaced was a blue clip.
Also a word to the wise when getting a new hub assembly dont buy a
cheap one. I bought one of the cheap ones and they are nothing but
trouble. Everytime I cut the wheels hard there was a loud banging
noise. Almost sounded like a axle was going bad. Called the parts
store and he told me it is likely the bearing. So I returned the one
causing problems and got one made by skf 230.00 CDN. Never had a
problem with it.

I've also had problems with my ABS light coming on - although I do get
a sound - somewhat of a cross between an electrical hum and a pump
noise - that will sound 2 or 3 times just before the light comes on.
There doesn't seem to be any commonality as to WHEN this happens -
sometimes its after I've been driving at highway speeds for half an
hour, sometimes when the car is barely warmed up. There is SOME
feedback in the brake pedal if it happens while I'm braking. I have
had terrible luck with this car as far as front wheel bearings goes -
at 175,000 km, I'm on my 4th set (first was replaced under warranty).
While I very much enjoy driving this car, all the amenities are in just
the right place for me, seats are comfortable, etc - I've found it to
be a participant in "name this month's warning light." Occasionally,
the theft system light comes on, but has never given me a problem
starting the car. I will sometimes get the "check engine" light, which
is often rectified by fiddling with the gas cap (who's the brain
surgeon who designed THAT?) Unfortunately, I won't be in a financial
position to replace this car for a few years, and I'm currently piling
50,000 km a year on it. In the next two months, I'll have to have the
ABS issue checked out, probably another set of bearings, and a paint
job (paint is flaking off the front of my hood, just above the grille
fairly fast). I'm not attracted to the import makes, I won't buy a
Chrysler, and Ford has nothing in its stable that interests me...so,
that kinda leaves me with GM....hope the recent surveys that show GM is
tied with Toyota for quality are accurate, because they sure weren't
with my Malibu.
