Default Alarm Problems with 2001 Malibu - 06-06-2005 , 10:35 AM

Is anyone else having problems with their alarms on their 2001
Malibu’s? My alarm will engage itself priotically and then my car will
not start for 10 minutes while I sit in it with the key in the on
position. very annoying. it doesn’t seem to be the battery because
it will do it if i turn of the car, get out for 20 minutes, and then
get back in and try to start it. Any ideas?

Bad Passlock sensor in the ignition cylinder.
I've just replaced it on a '01 and '02 car.
Common part to fail, part dealer lists at $100.

If the magnet in the lock cylinder is OK then it's a matter of changing the
lock cylinder housing as you don't have to rekey the lock cylinder. Usually
it's just the sensor that's bad and not the magnet.
Took me a 1/2 hour on my first one using Alldata as a reference manual, if I
didn't have it then it would have been an hour tops. Takes longer to get the
new sensor reprogrammed as you have to go through the start, wait 10 min.
cycle with key on, restart deal 3 times so the computer recognizes the new
sensor.
