Default Fuel Filter? - 01-17-2005 , 03:02 PM

Anyone able to tell me where the heck the fuel filter is? 1980 Chev Malibu
Classic, small V-8.

Girlfriends car is apparently notorious for needing this replaced, me
being the new boyfriend, I must figure it out to keep male pride
intact...thanks for your help....

Crawl under the rear of the car where the fuel tank is. Trace the fuel lines
that come out of the tank until you find the fuel filter. They are probably
within a couple feet of the actual tank. Hope this helps.

My first car in highscool ( 1992 ) was a 1979 Nova. My first day with the
car it stalled in a friends driveway. The parents were not happy having
this POS stuck there. Turns out it was the fuel filter and it was above
the block somewhere ( straigh 6 250 ). I replaced it with some huge clear
cleanable plastic filter and it was back in business.

Buddy of mine had an old impala... it was also in the engine compartment....
somewhat close to the carburetor. Try that too.

What a dope. This is not a new FI vehicle. It has a mechanical fuel
pump mounted on the block. the fuel filter is IN THE CARBURETOR and
there may be another one installed in-line a few inches away.
If the girlfriend keeps getting hers clogged up then you should install
a large one in-line under the hood where it can easily be changed. The
one in the carb holds very little. And continued clogging suggests a
rusty gas tank. Look for leaks soon.

Hey Busboy:

The professor has a good point...this is not a newer fuel injected car, so
the filter will likely be where the fuel line goes into the carburetor and
they are typically quite small...no larger in diameter than a typical
smaller cigar, unless of course someone has installed an inline filter, on
the fueline elsewhere under the hood. Yes, rusty sediment does get pulled
forward from old tanks and deteriorating gas lines and plays havoc with
these smaller filters. Change gas lines or gas tank after you change the
filter? Hmmmm.
