Default How long do scan codes show up for? - 12-09-2005 , 08:18 AM

I have a 2k Chev. Malibu and I recently had the problem of it cranking
fine, but not starting. From what I?ve read of this problem it could
be the ignition cylinder, pass lock sensor (I have no idea what that
is if someone wants to fill me in), or fuel pump. When this happened,
of course the check engine and oil lights came on. This occurance is
very INfrequent and what I?ve done in the past and what worked this
time again was to just get out of my car, took the keys out, close the
door, smoke a ciggy, get back in and try it again and it works. It
was a very warm evening. I didn?t mess with the power locks. I
believe I recall that the theft system light flashed. I have a couple
of questions such as since the problem is intermittant, how long if at
all are the last error codes stored in the carbrain? Can I take it to
Autozone even if the problem seems to have gone away and find out what
the last error was? Thanks for that usefull tidbit about them doing
the code scan for free. I would also like to have someone pour out
their knowledge of the "Theft System" how to reset it, what sets it
off, anything and everything. I?d love to know about it as mine will
just randomly flash on at times it seems. I do have a fair amount of
12V accessories hooked into the electrical system such as an FM
modulator, XM radio, Cellphone charger, and sometimes an invertor for
powering my lappytop and GPS. Any knowledge on the afore mentioned
things would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading!

I don't have a direct answer (sorry), but when I started getting theft
system problems starting up, I switched to the backup ignition key,
and haven't had a problem since. Going on over a year now without any
problems from the theft system with the backup key.
