Default humming sound while driving ??any ideas - 07-11-2005 , 02:37 AM

I would appreicate any help with this.
I have a 98 chevy malibu that is making a humming noise while driving.
It increases with speed. I had a friend look at it and suggested that
it maybe a bad tire or wheel bearing. He doesn’t think it is the wheel
bearing because it hasn’t gotten any worse and there is no clinking or
grating noise when turning the vehicle. I took it and had the front
wheels rotated to the rear but the noise is still there (in the
front)so I don’t think it was a tire problem. any ideas would be
helpful
thanks

Malibus are known for wheel bearings...I'd definitely get them checked
out.

Sounds too much like a hub bearing going out...
The bearing comes as a whole hub assembly..

Possibly, buts sounds like what my CV joints were doing before they were
replaced. Cheaper to replace the units as one. Too dangerous to put off
though. By the time mine were replaced (doing this noise for four days), the
ball joints were done (might as well while you're in there) and the upper
strut mounts (another malibu curse). Now, it's a sweet ride.

Good Luck.

If you have bad struts then you might have cupping on the tires
causing the the hum. Sounds stupid but you should check air pressure
too. If you feel across the tire you can see if it feels rough.
