But I think you made a good choice picking the 2004 Malibu. I'm not big

good, I

I got a good deal on it as a used car, it was a rental car before I got
it.
I have only heard bad things about the 97s and 98s and figured hell they
have had 7 years to work out the bugs.
I had a 2001 and currently have a 2003.

The 2001 was a piece of crap (needed a new engine).

They had 7 years and never got rid of the bugs, just added some new ones

Lot of bugs in your 2003 huh? Im happy to say, no problems yet.

No it's not. MSRP for both was about 22K and the Sebring had leather seats, a
trip computer/air temperature readout and "auto-stick" tranny (the Malibu
didn't have those). Both had a sun roof and identically equipped otherwise.
Where are you getting your numbers? I did pay a little more (about $1,500
more) for the Sebring only because Chrysler wasn't giving as large of a rebate.

Change oil every 3,000 miles.
Change fuel filter every 10,000 miles.
Check/clean MAF, ACT, IAT, and other sensors.
Check/clean EGR valve.
Flush radiator yearly & replace with new coolant.
Replace spark plugs yearly if copper, every 3~4 years if platinum or
Iridium.
Replace spark plugs wires every ~5 years or when worn. Inspect yearly.
Check tire pressures bi-monthly at least. Preferably weekly.
Check exhaust system for leaks while changing oil.
Check suspension components while changing oil.
Check for rust on underbody while changing oil.
Whenever you work on your own car, make sure you do it all correctly the
*first* time.

These are just a few of the maintenance issues that I feel aren't addressed
properly.

Poor service isn't everywhere. I agree... some dealerships are complete &
utter morons & assholes. Others are friendly & want the customers to go home
happy. Somebody care to point me to the latter? Because I haven't found too
many!!

I will never buy another GM car. This decision has to do more with the

I went to a dealer the other day for an alignment and tire rotation and
balance and got just as bad service and understand you anger, but I just
assumed it was that dealer and not GM, I will try a different dealer the
next time.

The 2001 and the 2003 were both new.

The 2001 needed a new engine at 42,000 kms due to the dreaded piston
slap problem that all of the 3.1L V6s suffer from.

Hear hear, You wouldn't believe the ungodly large number of people that I
can obviously tell never take care of their cars and then complain to the
dealer that its teh manufacturers fault. If you do nothing else AT THE VERY

And what happens when you adhere to the manufacturers maintenance
guidelines and they still have to replace an engine due to GMs poor
design?

Actually the 2003 is a lot better than the 2001.

It's only had a bad strut mount, a bad tire, 2 bad fuel pumps, and the
front rotors were replaced under warranty.

The engine is now starting to exhibit the typical piston slap noise, but
GM won't do anything about that now, so it will be their problem when it
comes off of the lease in 2 more years.

I don't see how you can get a bad car from 'GMs poor design' yet others with
the same model and make have never had problems.
