Default Malibu 98 - strut replacement - 08-27-2003 , 04:28 PM

The left strut's spring broke in my my Malibu'98, I bought an used strut and
plan to change it myself, looking for tips, hints and advice on things to
avoid and/or things I should be careful about when doing it.

Thanks,

Guillermo

My Upper Strut mount is broken on my 97 Malibu. Not sure how it happened but
it makes a poping noise when I stop. The dealer wants $400 to replace it so
take a good look at yours when replacing the spring.

I assume you mean the front-left. Struts all around in the Malibu.

I changed the struts on my '93 Beretta a few years ago. Not a fun job.
Biggest hassle is getting the mounting bolts out and back in. Shops will use
a hammer gun to push them out. May need to use a torch to heat up the mount
around the bolt first.

Best to get yourself a Haynes manual as a start. The steps are pretty
straightforward, but it _is_ a big job, and you need the right tools (like
a spring compressor).

Also count on needing an alignment once you're done.

Bottom line for me is I'll never do struts myself again. Not worth the time
and effort, and a good shop will include the alignment as part of the job
and not as an a la carte item.

On another note, it's probably not a great idea to only do one side.

Good luck.
