I assume you mean the front-left. Struts all around in the Malibu.
I changed the struts on my '93 Beretta a few years ago. Not a fun job.
Biggest hassle is getting the mounting bolts out and back in. Shops will use
a hammer gun to push them out. May need to use a torch to heat up the mount
around the bolt first.
Best to get yourself a Haynes manual as a start. The steps are pretty
straightforward, but it _is_ a big job, and you need the right tools (like
a spring compressor).
Also count on needing an alignment once you're done.
Bottom line for me is I'll never do struts myself again. Not worth the time
and effort, and a good shop will include the alignment as part of the job
and not as an a la carte item.
On another note, it's probably not a great idea to only do one side.
