Default Malibu'98 transmission fluid - 12-25-2003 , 01:05 PM

Could someone please tell me if when adding transmission fluid I should do
it with the motor running and until fluid starts to drip from the fluid
level screw or if the engine should just be at normal operation temperature
and not running while adding and checking the fluid level?

Guillermo

Just did a transmission oil and filter change on a 1987 Malibu, made one
heck of a difference.

According to the GM service manual, add transmission fluid till it just
starts to drip from the transmission check level plug. Car should be LEVEL
and COLD.

Do not check with car running as the transmission will be overfilled and
axle seals could leak due to overfilling.

Before posting the question I had done some searches w/o success, I kept
searching the net after posting the question and found this:

***********************
"> I've got a '98 Malibu that I want to check/fill the transmission fluid.

Get the trans up to operating temp, engine running, in park.....raise the
vehicle level, remove the fluid level screw (this is located at approx 5
o'clock on the passenger side trans output housing if you are looking at it
from the passenger side front wheel) and add fluid to the trans thru the red
vent cap on the top of the trans at the back of the engine until fluid
drains out the hole.
**********************

Your advice is the opposite "Cold engine and not running" but it is for a
Maliby 1987, mine is 1998, probably 2 vary different types of transmissions.
Anybody can confirm that engine should be up to op.temp, running and in park
while checking/filling the tranny fluid?

Thx,

Guillermo

Well Guillermo,

I just posted what it says in the GM service manual for Malibu's 1997 thru
to 2001. You have a 4T40E transmission in that car / Transmission used in GM
product Malibu 1997-Present.
You asked for advise, you got it. Its your car do what you want with it!

Well, before you said your car was 1987, current versions of Malibu were not
intruduced that far back so I wasn't sure your advice was applicable to my
1998, but now that you are saying it is actually 1997, which makes a world
of difference.

GM service manual for Malibu's 1997 thru 2001 have a 4T40E transmission.

Add transmission fluid till it just starts to drip from the transmission
check level plug. Car should be LEVEL and COLD.

Do not check with car running as the transmission will be overfilled and
axle seals could leak due to overfilling and transmission could malfunction.

Never said my car was a 1987, said changed fluid and filter on one. Specs
for current Malibu was posted.

You asked and got an answer, don't like or believe the answer fine.

Maybe you do not understand the English. You certainly do not comprehend it.
Where in that message does it say that my car is a 1987 Malibu.

If a mechanic say's I changed the oil and filter on a 2004 Rolls Royce does
that mean that he has one???? using your logic - in your mind - I guess
you draw the conclusion that he does.

Whether you own a Malibu or not is absolutely inconsequencial, the important
thing is that you said: "Just did a transmission oil and filter change on a
1987 Malibu, made one heck of a difference" then you gave the procedure to
use from the GM serv.manual. I wasn't counting with the fact that you
changed the ATF for a 1987 Malibu but gave me the procedure to use for a
1998, silly me for not realizing that!! BTW, I don't know if such thing as
a 1987 Malibu exists or not.

Once again, I appreciate your advice.

Guillermo
