Default question chevy Corsica '95 service engine light - 07-24-2008 , 10:41 PM

First let me apologize for posting here, but this is the closest i could
find for a chevy auto ng.

The "service engine" light keeps coming on in my Corsica.
Is there a way to make it stop coming on, and if so, how is it done?
TIA for any help.
Al

Not that much traffic here, no problem.

You gotta take someplace to get the code read.
Or buy a code reader. Something like omb code.
Then have the problem fixed that causes the
Chk Eng light. Otherwise, you won't pass EPA
inspection. And if you don't have EPA inspection,
there is probably something wrong that needs addressing.

thanks for your reply. I took it to AutoZone and the guy there siad he
could read it if it said "check engine," but not if it said "service
engine." He said it was probably due for a an oil change or something. I
paid more attention to what it said and here is what it says exactly:
"service engine soon." It has about 85,000 miles on it, so maybe there
isn't something wrong, and it's just alerting me to do some undefined
service. Am I on the right track?
Thank,s

Do you know if your car is an OBD or OBDII?

If it is the first one, you can jumper 2 holes in the terminal and read the
flashes. This will tell you what is wrong.

If it is the second one, take it to a garage and have them read the code.

It is emissions/fuel economy/engine management related and not just an oil
change. Mind you, sometimes a bad fuel filter, plugs or wires may cause it
to come on.

Find out what code it is.

Al. It could be something that can be reset.
I had a reset button on my '87 Vanagon, that
was needed pushed every 50K miles or so,
it turned a light in the dash that the O2 sensor
needed replacing, which I ignored and pushed
the button on the odometer box. I had problems
with a bad O2 sensor eventually and needed it
replaced.
I suggest you invest in a Chilton or Haynes
service manual. If it is something that can
be reset, like for an oil change, the book will
probably cover that. And the book will tell
you some about the OBD(II or I). I believe
you have a OBDI in there, which most code
readers can't read I guess. I guess AutoZone
can't read it, so you have to go to a Chevy dealer
or mechanic to have it read. It is good to have
a mechanic you trust anyway.
I ramble a bit.

If it says "service engine soon"... it probably is just telling you to do an
oil change.

DO you have the owners manual? If so, It will tell you how to reset it.
It's usually a combination of buttons between your radio.

On my impala, you can also reset it by turning the ignition on (but not
starting the car), pressing the accelerator to the floor five times.
