Yeah... my car.. but it's not an automatic. hehe. It couldn't hurt to get
out your multimeter & check the TPS. Takes 5 minutes.

Yes they do have a TPS but I was not even going in that direction. Have
you seen something like this before that the TPS was the cause.

Thanks

Checking other archives, someone mentioned checking both brake pedal
switches. The right one (no idea from what orientation) allegedly is the
cruise control brake switch, and commands the torque converter clutch to
disengage (even if you don't have cruise...). This switch does *not*
control the brake lights; the left switch does that, so don't assume that if
you have enough pedal travel before the lights come on you're OK.

Another poster mentioned that the EGR could be malfunctioning.

I havne't really done anything to check on it. The message you gave is
exactly what it sounds like. I would hate to think about having to live
with it. I probably will chek the fuel system such as the filter and run
some injector cleaner through it to begin with. It seems like it is one
thing after another with the Malibu.

So I decided to look at the injectors on the Malibu. I got some Lucas (I
am not promoting) injector cleaner. I have used other injector cleaners
before but this stuff is awesome. I think this surging is strictly dirty
injectors. I have put about 600 miles on since I used the cleaner and the
car has not done it once! Not to mention that it is running a lot
smoother. Check out the Lucas injector cleaner vs cleaners like STP. It
is a totally different product. The Lucas product is a thick fluid
compared to the other products which I think are mostly diesel fuel. If
my car starts acting up again I will be back on here updating this.
Thanks to all for helping out.

Muy "01" Malibu surges between second and third gear and runs normally when
shifting manually. This doesn't sound exactly like what you are describing
but it sure sounds close. Is anybody else having this type of shifting
problem with a Malibu? Or better yet, a fix without having to pull the
transmission?

Well, we took our malibu for a trip this past weekend, and I noticed tht
not only did it surge around the 40-50mph range, it lack any acceleration
around 70-80. It seemed to not be able to get going at that speeds. I
guess I'll get a friend of mine's father who runs a transmission shop
opinion. This, after spending money on brakes and calipers. Geez.

I had the exact same problem,
I Changed my fuel filter and it had no effect on the surging. I then
changed the spark plugs and the surging is completly gone and the car is
running great.
Try it out

Good Luck.
