Default 1993 GMC Cheyenne 1500 ext. cab w/ 5 speed issues - 02-26-2007 , 01:59 PM

My father purchased a 93, 1500 series from a friend.

His friend had it special ordered from the factory with a 350 and a 5
speed manual trans. Supposedly, he had them take the SS version with
the 454 and a 5 speed, and slap in a 350 instead. if that helps to
indicate anything.

180,xxx miles and the truck runs great.

Until about a week ago. My dad lost 2nd and 4th all together, and the
same time.

So he got an estimate on a new trans and the place wanted 1500 for a
rebuilt, price including labor. I am hoping they are including a new
clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate for this price too.

I am 18, and am currently going to Universal Technical institute. I
have great mechanical skills. I would like to help my dad out with his
problems, and get the tranny and to the swap for him. I need your help
to figure out:

A: Pin point which of the 3(?) 5 speeds it has...
B: What they should cost?
C: if the trans it self just needs something little done to the inside
of it instead of a rebuild

It didn't have any shifting problems what so ever. The only thing i
can think of is the fact that the oil may not have been changed in its
life time.

Thank you for your time.

-Spencer

the 5 speed was an option on the 350. My truck originally had one. My
father in-law decided he would rather have a turbo 400 instead of
spending 1500 bucks on another 5 speed. Had to do a lot of looking to
find the right u-joints to match the original driveshaft w/ the 400's
end. works great! if your father does not like this idea, he can find
a good used trans off of any 4.3 v6 s10 or 1500. they are the same
trans. good luck!

I found out some more stuff. I drove his truck and with some near
perfect rev matching it goes into gear. It is supposedly the
tranmission right from the transition from year to year. The MG5
according to the local trans shop.

I know his detent balls/springs are shot, becuase you can't feel it
click into gear and you can go to far and hear the sleeve mashing
against the gear. I am probably going to attempt to rebuild it.

Thanks for the reply by the way
