Default Problems with topcoatings on Chevrolets? - 09-15-2009 , 12:09 PM

Hi all,

today I have been to a car dealer to lokk at a black 2003 Chevrolet SSR
(yes the convertible).

It is a funny car and I fancy it, but we went away due to the fact that the
transparent top coating started to give out.
On the sharp edges (dors, trunk and around the wheels) we could see that the
top layer started to wear off.
Not big parts, but it looks like washing the car might make it worse. So we
went home.

Is this a known problem for Chevrolet ? Or for any specific model ?

I think the only thing that can be done is sand the car completely up to the
black and spray paint it again in black. Agree ?
That is not a nice option to start your new purchase with.

I'd like to hear your opinions on the Chevrolet paint quality.

I've got a 2002 Impala LS and a 2004 Avalanche Z71, both black with
clearcoat and never had any issues with the clearcoat. Nor has any of the
other people I know of with factory GM clearcoat. My guess would that it's
not factory finish.

That is because someone buffed it WAY to much. That will eat the edges
off the paint in a big hurry.

It's a known problem for ANY make that a moron and a buffer got close to.

Not really. It is possible to shoot clear only IF the paint under it is
OK. BUT I would tell the dealer to do it as a condition of sale.

The paint wasn't the problem. The buffer was.
Think of it this way, when you use a power buffer you are basically
using a VERY FINE sander. On the sharp edges and corners it is VERY easy
to apply excessive pressure and buff straight through the paint. Happens
a lot.

It's factory, but the clear has been buffed off. VERY common, especially
if a hamfisted moron is using the buffer.

Today I went to the body shop.
Their first question was: is it imported ?
And as it is, their reply was: we see alot of USA cars loosing the top coat.
Quality failure due to other legal demands.

Their solution is to sand en spray again the whole car.
I am now considering that.
The seller almost has dropped the price as much as repainting will cost
me.....

Well, sounds like you found the buffer guy. Id make him lower it the whole
cost of the paint job. Youre gonna have problems again later with it. If
you respray it.
