1994 Chrysler New Yorker - Bad Shimmy, no findings

I recently purchased a 1994 Chrysler New Yorker. 77,000 miles, very
clean engine, very well maintained. A few weeks after I started
driving it, I began to get a bad shimmy in the steering well at 40+
mph. I had the tires checked out by two different mechanics. Tires,
axles, suspension were reported as fine. The tires were balanced and
new wheel weights put on, but the problem persists. It doesn't happen
all the time, but when bad, it's very bad and very scary.
Impersonates the sound of a flat tire, but tires are fine. I can be
doing 70 on the highway and not have a problem, but I might be doing
50 the next day and it begins. Anyone else had this one? I'm
stumped. My mechanic is stumped. Also, the ABS light on my message
center stays on. The former owner had it checked out and apparently,
no one could figure out how to get it to go off without
disconnecting. Is there any connection between the ABS and the
problem I'm having? I love this car, but I'm afraid to take it on a
long trip until the problem is diagnosed and repaired.

Not a mechanic, just an old retired electrical guy, but for what
little it may be worth...

Had a Pontiac wagon that did what you're describing. Intermittent,
as is yours. Sometimes a perfect ride. Other times hard to hold
on to the steering wheel.

After all kinds of unnecessary repairs, turned out to be one of
the belts in one of the tires would turn itself over. (but each
time the car was lifted it would flop back to correct again)

What's the fault code in the ABS controller?

What's the fault code in the ABS controller?

Way back in 1978 my dodge van's front disc brakes piston (plastic) would
hang up and not fully return into the??????????????
This would give me a hard shimmy, and after a bit one could smell the
brakes burning.

Not consistent, however, sometimes it was OK then sometimes after
applying the brake it (piston) would hang up.
Just one more place to look for a problem
