Default neon oil drain plug leak - 08-18-2004 , 12:50 PM

After getting tired of hearing my landlord bitch about my gf not
parking on the board he has placed in the driveway for her car, and
hearing about the damages to he driveway which has the cheapest
ashfault avalible, I desided to try to track down the very small oil
leak in the car. It appears to only leak over night when the car cools
down. This leak is so small that over a two month period, the engine
has not lost enough oil to show a difference on the dip stick.
Anyway, I noticed that the oil appears to be coming off of the Oil
drain plug. I have heard that it is possible to have the drain plug
threads damaged. Is there any way to resolve this small leak without
replacing the oil pan? I really do not want to spend too much money on
the car, but I am tired of hearing the wining of my landlord.
Any Ideas?

Is the drain plug supposed to have a washer? Is it there? Is it damaged
and in need of replacing? A plastic washer is cheap and might be the cure
to your problem.

most times the washer needs replacing, should be done every oil change.
the drain plug threads are softer than the pan, and designed so that if it
is threaded wrong, it is supposed to damage the plug not the pan. but that
doesnt always happen.
if it was just done by a garage recently, if you just bring it back there
they most likely will put a new gasket on for free. (if they changed it) new
plugs arent expensive, around here under $5.
hope that helps

The drain plug and gasket are one piece on the neon. My MIL has a 97 and the
drain plug leaked, even after I bought a new one for her car. What I ended
up doing was filing the oil pan smooth, were the drain hole was. that cured
her leak for the drain plug. The aluminum pan has a lot of flash and burrs
around all the edges. you could try that. Plug the hole with a cloth so as
not to introduce filings into oil pan.
