The trans is picky about maintenance. Make sure it has had the fluid

60K miles, serviced regularly by dealer, and changing transmission fluid
has never been suggested (although they do keep trying to get us to get
the fuel injectors "serviced").

I may have misremembered on this point: looking at the book to see what is
needed at the next service (60K miles), I noticed that changing the
transaxle fluid is recommended at 48K miles, so perhaps it did get done as
a routine matter and I forgot about it.

For your sake I certainly hope so. I would hate to see you have to get a
new trans just because the fluid wasn't changed. Also be damn sure whoever
changes it be it you, the dealer, or another shop uses ATF+4 fluid unless
you like the rough shifts and reduced trans life caused by Dexron with or
without lubeguard added.

And don't forget to change the differential fluid periodically too.
75W-90 or 80W-90.
