All,

I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee Limited ( 5.2 liter ) with only 41,000 miles, and
a strange problem. Lately, when the fuel tank is below 1/2 full, it is warm
outside ( ambient temp 70+ ) and the vehicle has been driven for 50+ miles, at
higway speeds, the engine will begin to stumble and gag like it is running out
of fuel. This only happens upon heavier acceleration ( like pulling out of a
toll-booth ), or climbing a hill. If I barely depress the gas pedal, it runs
fine. It also idles fine, and, If I stop and refuel, the problem seems to go
away immediately. I have never noticed this around town. It acts like it is
starving for fuel. This problem does not seem to set any codes, or illuminate
the check engine light..... Any ideas????/

Thanks

Jeffrey

The in-tank electric fuel pump is either failing or the filter is very
clogged (or both). My dad's old Dakota has exactly the same drivetrain
and once had the same problem. In that case, it was the fuel pump itself
which seemed to get weaker as it got hotter. A full tank of fuel would
keep it cool enough to work indefinitely, but once below half a tank it
would start to weaken. It finally got to the point that the truck
couldn't be driven, though it would still start and idle fine. A new
fuel pump cured it.

Thanks for the reply. Seems that a new fuel pump is in order.
