Default Any advice on Mopar engines? - 07-13-2003 , 05:21 PM

I'm looking at a '77 Mustang which has had a Mopar 318 fitted, anything I
should know about these engines? I forgot to ask the year of the engine but
will find out tomorrow (not interested if it's mid 70's). Basically I want
to know anything like if they are hugely expensive to repair or hard to find
parts for?

Cheers!
Dan

dan parts are available.
Seen that car for sale, I'd be dubious about its worth with a mopar in it.
Probably best to flog the mopar ( or find something else to put it into )
and put a ford lump back in the mustang. Of course it depends how much its
been hacked about to put the mopar in it..

In addition to that check that it's not died the black death. Old V8's
seem to have alot fo power in them even when the cam has been worn away
due to lack of oil changes.

You've got whats slowly becoming a classic with the wrong engine, worse than
that its even the wrong brand of engine, Im positive it will devalue it. Bit
like having a classic rover with a jag engine stuffed into it.. its halfway
to being a custom car but not old enough/radical enough.

The ad I saw for that car said something about needing rear arches to be
welded on.

If your interior is a bit shabby just get it retrimmed rather than trying to
find equally old stuff thats in slightly better nick.

If you want more power I know of a 351 ford lump going for reasonable
cash...

As usual you're a great source of information Mark, cheers for the heads
up!
That engine looks real good and the price seems pretty reasonable too.
Still
debating the '77 with Mopar though. The seller claims the engine is strong
and has had all new gaskets fitted through recently. Also, it's a T-Top
and
has a few other nice extras. The other factor is that it's LHD and so
would
be much easier to find interior parts for than mine (interior on my '78 is
a
bit shabby and it seems impossible to find replacement parts). Do you
really
think having the Mopar in would devalue it? Seller claims it's 250hp+
which
is way more than the stock 302 from a Mustang II. Are they not very well
thought of? Any advice on ascertaining whether it's a good'un or not? The
thing I'm most dubious about is that the engine has been fitted but not
connected up - surely a small job for anyone who knows what they're doing
and it would make the car far more saleable. I may tell the seller I will
only consider it if I can see it connected up and running.

Cheers,
Dan
