Default Bang - 02-11-2007 , 08:35 AM

Parked up the SD1 in town yesterday, and there was a slight bang when I
closed the door and locked things. Sounded a bit like a plastic water
bottle bursting. Thinking it might be in the boot, opened the hatch.
Nothing. Closed the hatch and most of the window fell in...

Strangely, the same happened to my brother last year with his BMW E28. In
all my years driving I've only had one window shatter, and that was a
screen on the autobahn. So was probably a stone. This simply self
destructed. The heater was on, but the day not cold.

I've contacted Autoglass about having it replaced - it's covered by the
insurance. Not heard back from them. Rimmer don't list the correct spare.
They do sell plain (instead of tinted) glass unheated, though. Wonder if
they'll source the correct one?

Had the same thing on the rear glass of a rover 214 3-door (1990) a few
years back, no apparent cause or reason, just happened. It was, however, -5
degrees at the time, might have been a contributory factor maybe...
Good luck getting it replaced witht he correct one.
Badger.

Nasty! You will still be finding little bits of glass weeks after you were
certain you cleaned it all up!

It would be worth giving Rimmers a phone call rather than looking on their
stock list. When some clown put a hammer through my side window (and two
other cars in my street) and Rimmers didn't stock a replacement, I asked if
they knew anyone breaking a car that might supply me with a window. And
Rimmers sorted it and sent me one - I was invoiced the window, "Part Used".

So if you want a tinted heated one instead of their stock item, it could be
worth asking.

Jim

I'd probably try Wins at Lingfield first for a secondhand one as it's not
that far from here. But I'm still hoping for a new one - the heating
element often gives trouble after a few years. I'd repaired mine a few
times.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Dave Plowman (News)"
<dave (AT) davenoise (DOT) co.uk> saying something like:

Happened to me a couple of years ago on an Escrote van. One of the rear
windows simply starred over with a bit of a crack as I was driving
along. Cold day and movement stresses, I thought at the time.
