Default "Classic Clutches" - 03-24-2008 , 07:29 AM

Afternoon, all.

I've just pulled the gearbox from my Herald to have a look at the
clutch (the car has been laid up for ten years). It could do with
replacement - it has done 85,000 miles. I have a new release bearing
and a good-as-new Borg and Beck cover in stock, but no spare driven
plates.

It's been a while (ten years) since I did this. In Ye Olde Days I'd
have been straight out to buy a Borg and Beck driven plate, but they
seem to have disappeared in favour of clutches and kits made by
"Classic Clutches".

Are these any good? Any experiences?

Ian

Herald? Suggest www.canleyclassics.com or www.jamespaddock.com. Or even
Rimmer Brothers.

For a less model-specific but still good service,
www.carparts-direct.co.uk/. My local shop, very knowledgable and
friendly.

Compared with using a knackered one they are. They're all pretty much
of a muchness nowadays.

Canley do Classic Clutches, as far as I know. Paddock don't say, but
at their prices they bloody well ought to be B&B!

I'll have a look. I managed to find a very reasonably priced B&B
driven plate on eBay, so I'm going with that now ...

The old one is not knackered, just rather thin on friction material,
and with the overdrive it's just a wee bit more of a bugger than
normal to change. So while it's out ...

I had a Lockheed branded clutch for the Herald a while back (I know
B&B are Lockheed now, but this was different). It was not a success -
the feel was different (possibly because it had fewer fingers on the
spring) and the driven plate cracked round the spring supports after
<10,000 miles.

Borg & Beck clutches and Lockheed brakes always used to be made (in the UK
at any rate) by Automotive Products in Leamington Spa. However their
factory disappeared some years ago so I don't know what the situation is
now. I can't find any trace of a company called Classic Clutches of
Coventry, apart from people who stock them for Triumphs and things, either
on Google or the Coventry Yellow pages, but that doesn't mean there isn't
one, just another senior moment on my part....
Can someone please enlighten me as I am rebuilding a spare engine for my
Lea-Francis and it's going to need a clutch.

Sorry, my own senior moment. The dud was a GKN Laycock job...
