Default Sunpass only exits on FL Turnpike - 03-24-2009 , 08:47 AM

Headed down to Kissimmee yesterday for a little baseball and couldn't
help but notice at the Consulate Rd exit on the FL Turnpike that the
exit ramp (or one of them anyway if there was a second one somewhere)
was a Sunpass only exit (no cash accepted). Also noted a warning at
the US192/441 exit for Kissimmee that the next exit accepting cash was
52 miles ahead. Kind of a subtle way of, "encouraging," Sunpass sales,
innit?

"This item demonstrates how stupid the average American is. Every
ninety minutes someone in this country is hit by a train. A train,
okay? Trains are on tracks; they can't come and get you. They
can't surprise you when you step off a curb. You have to go to them.
Got that?"

Interesting. I've driven in that area, but not on the Turnpike. That is a
MAJOR touristy area. I imagine a large percentage of drivers in that area
do not have Sunpass, and it would be silly for them to obtain one (for a
single or a few trips). So I found your story of seeing a warning for no
cash accepted for 52 miles to be somewhat questionable. That is, I didn't
believe you. But I looked it up on the Florida Turnpike web page. Now I'm
just plain confused, as the web site directly contradicts itself. Note the
following two quotes:

(note the mainline runs through Kissimmee)

"Toll plazas along the Mainline feature at least one lane staffed by an
attendant 24 hours per day. If you require change, receipts or even
directions, look for an overhead green sign. If you have exact change,
proceed toward the lanes featuring overhead blue signs."

So that would say that cash IS accepted, at the toll plazas in and near
Kissimmee. In fact, the toll plazas along the entire length of the turnpike
should be staffed 24/7 with a person who is there specifically to make
change, among other things. But then there's this quote:

"Not all exit and entrance ramp toll plazas are staffed, so motorists should
be prepared to have exact change at these interchanges..."

OK, so are they staffed or are they NOT staffed? Make up yer fricking mind
already...

If Florida is really NOT staffing their toll plazas for fifty mile stretches
to encourage electronic toll collection use, at least they (Florida) aren't
as bad as Oklahoma. I found out the hard way that if you want to travel 44
in Oklahoma (Will Rogers Turnpike, John Kilpatrick Turnpike, the same road
goes by like three or four different names), you'd better carry a couple
hundred pounds (weight) of quarters with you. If you are a local resident,
you could apply for something called Pikepass (electronic toll). But if
you're just passing through the state of Oklahoma, you are in for a NASTY
surprise when you reach the John Kilpatrick Turnpike (route 44). That nasty
surprise is, the toll plazas are unstaffed, and accept exact change in
quarters only. So you either have the Pikepass transponder OR hundreds of
pounds of quarters (by weight) with you, before you enter the turnpike. If
not, you get a huge fine.
And you'd think it would be nice of Oklahoma to warn motorists just passing
through the area of this very real toll FINE trap that will rob you of a
significant amount of money. And if you ASK the Oklahoma Turnpike
authority, they will say that there are signs posted to warn motorists that
Pikepass or exact change is required. But there's a "Gotcha". If you
prepare to enter the Turnpike, you need to choose a traffic lane separated
from all other lanes by a physical barrier. AFTER YOU ENTER THIS LANE,
there is most definitely a single sign posted warning that to use the
Turnpike (that you are already on) you need either Pikepass or exact change.

Yes, I know. The isgnange for Exit 244 - US192/441 - Kissimmee read,
"Next Cash Exit 52 Miles," on a yellow strip under the BGS for the
exit.

The other street (Consulate Dr) I referenced actually has (for now)
two exits on the southbound lanes - Exit 255 - Sunpass Only andd Exit
254 with cash lanes.
