I once read an article which explained the "fly", in "fly yellow", but I wasn't convinced at the time so I don't recall where I read it nor what it said... Anybody? (...Sorry Mike, it predates hip-hop.) |

I once read an article which explained the "fly", in "fly yellow" "Ferrari Light Yellow"? Since it's not very light, that seems odd. I always figured references to *Fly Yellow* referred to a resemblence to the bug or to the fact that this kind of colour attracts bugs. http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/livest...llow_fly01.htm C. |

Oh, that's nice. Looking at that picture is far worse than having to endure Ice-T's lyrics. MC |

| Ice was killer on "Rhyme Pays". Who didn't like "Six in the Morning"? |

"matt borland" wrote... If anyone knows the real answer, it'll be T308. You rang?? I've heard a variety of thoughts on it, but nobody has proved the origin that I know of. Most have an opinion (like FLY = Ferrari Light Yellow) but nobody's got facts. Giallo Fly certainly isn't "light". Solar Yellow is the light yellow. The first mention of Glidden/Salchi 20Y191 "Giallo Fly" that I have is in a late 1960s paint chip book that features the colors that were available on Ferraris at the time. Most of the chips on the chart are standard Glidden paints that were renamed/customized by Salchi SpA (the Glidden partner in Italy that supplied Scaglietti) to add some spice to the list. The color descriptions were the standard color name in Italian plus the name of a great race horse unless the color already existed on the previous list (Like Blu Sera or Rosso Chiaro). The names include Amaranto Bull Lea, Azzurro Hyperion, Blu Ribot, Grigio Mahmoud, Marrone Colorado, Nero Dark Ronald, Oro Kelso, Oro Nashrullah, Rosso Sir Ivor, Verde Medio Nijinsky, Verde Pino Blenheim and Verde Seabird. All great race horses. I spent most of my youth at Santa Anita Racetrack and I never knew a great horse named Fly. My take is that someone at Salchi had a sense of humor. Having been around horses, having cleaned up after horses, having walked horses there is something thats always around a horse. Flys and lots of them. T308 to win |
