Uh-huh, and whose fault is that, eh..? :-)

Crossposts to Dodge and Corvette groups don't
exactly help...

I have been very careful. VERY careful. I never wanted to see the word
HOBBES again in this venue.

-MC- "Fuck."

My fault on that one. I truly was looking at Corvettes, Ferraris, Porsches,
Vipers and Audi S-8s all at the same time, and trying to cross analyze them.
But then, I haven't found the owners of any of these marks to generally be
any less in the auto enthusiast arenas than Tomaso Mangusta, Ferrari F355,
or Pantera owners. The religious arguments that got injected into the
forums by a couple of people in the Corvette group surprised me. One of
the offenders is a huge fan of the 246 Dino (I sent him Forza the month it
was their cover picture) and races Z06s on the drag strip. I didn't know
about his other side until I saw the flame war being cross posted into my
thread. I truly was only looking for car input, and wouldn't have cross
posted if I thought it was going to lead to the off topic stuff that the two
posted.

It seems to have settled out now.

Well, it isn't you, if that means anything. If anything I'm the one who
was responsible for the last conflagration. I'm just sorry you have
that one gaping sore over in the 'Vette group. This group seems to be
able to rid itself of diseases pretty easily, after the initial
fireworks ...

I didn't recall you mentioning the S8 before. I'll tell you, that car
blows my mind. Certainly it, like any Audi, does not have the appeal
that Ferraris have, and most here lump them in with Porsches and that's
that. But I've liked Audis ever since the Walter Rorhl and John Buffum
days .... and then I saw "Ronin", and that notched it up big time.
Every time I see an S or RS model out here I jump to attention. The
aesthetic design may be dull but the engineering is pure rock and roll.

Funny you should mention Ronin. One of my partners has an A8, and I
actually went in to look at an A6 to replace my 99 S 420 Mercedes which is a
great car, but duller than dirt. I test drove the A6, and it was fine,
but not enough to replace the Mercedes. The sales guys says: "I've got a
2002 car you might like, it's called an S-8, which is like an A8. It looked
like my partner's car from the outside, except this was sporting 19 inch
wheels. So I drove it. I couldn't believe what a great car it was.

So.... the next night I rented Ronin, and watched it a few times up to the
part where they riddle the car to death. I almost made a deal on trading
the Mercedes in for the S-8 (and I may yet regret not doing so) when it
dawned on me that for not a lot different money, I could keep the Mercedes
and put a real sports car in the garage, and keep the Mercedes. Which is
what I ended up doing.

However, if there comes a time where I'm made out of money, I'm going to get
the F355 and the S-8 and use the S-8 as my daily driver. But first I think
I'll spend a bit of time learning how NOT to spin the Viper. : - )

I don't think anyone would ever regret buying an S-8. There are some
pretty reasonable deals out there on the 2001s now.

I always wondered why the "Driver" needed a nitrous rig on the thing,
since there wasn't going to be a lot of long-range acceleration, mostly
point-and-squirt at high speed. But then I remembered, it's just the
movies!
