US coverage of all international stories (excluding those where the US
are shooting/being shot by people) is unspeakably low level. I wonder if
the reason the Paris riots are getting any news space at all is the
anti-French views of the various powers that be*.

We get Fox News on Sky TV here (same owner*) and we watch it
occasionally just for entertainment.

The latest update on all the local politics, mostly. The important
stuff? Put it behind the story about the mayor's wife's DUI...
Does she have brothers called HUI and LUI ?

For all the finger-wagging we get about things like this you'd
think someone would pounce on this opportunity to point out
we're not the only "civilized" western nation where this occurs.
I heard that some US media did indeed see this as a good opportunity to
bash France and its government.

Maybe give a little more history on why these people were
ready to riot after two teens get killed while hiding from police.
Oddly usual situation here: some dumbass gets stupidly killed all by
himself while being chased by policemen (either he crashes his car,
drowns, or, as in the present case, breaks into a power generator), and
the local youth get all upset, pretend that police is responsible of the
death and start burning their neighborhood.

Nothing like the Rodney King case, as you see.

The only difference today is that, whereas it usually stops after a few
fires and stones, it's been growing and spreading everywhere (I mean, in
all poor neighborhoods).

No sustainable explanation actually: the event in itself is sad, but
should not have triggered all this turmoil. The real reasons should be
sought more deeply, such as poverty, unemployment, ghetto-isation...

Me too. Particularly with titles such as "Is Paris burning?", which are
overexaggerated. The situation is indeed worrying, but for time being
the riots stay concentrated in the ghettos (the perfect circle, really:
they're burning the little they had).

Aren't we though? I guess that's why 97% of the worlds wealth is here.
Yea, we really suck, that's why we have the highest immigration of any
country on the planet. Yea, were a bunch of tools, we saved Europe
from Hitler and didn't ask for anything other than enough land in
France to bury our dead.

Good try bud...
back in your shitty little car.

Paul
(not entirely sure that 'sauté-ing' is a word)

ar,
If you listen closely you'll hear a sucking sound. That's our jobs
going to China and India.

Paul, the service related jobs are and will continue to go overseas.
And it only makes sense. The rest of the world only exists to serve
America. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it is the truth. Let the
low paying jobs go out of country. They need to Paul.
The problem is that the United States has evolved to such a superior
intellect over the rest of the world that the delta is becoming a
management problem for us. It is incumbent on America to drag the rest
of the world kicking and screaming into the present.
Then maybe we won't have to prop up their economies and fight their
wars.

Reminds me of a Dead Kennedys song (note the accented parts)

Rioting-the unbeatable high
Adrenalin shoots your nerves to the sky
Everyone knows this town is gonna blow
And it's all gonna blow right now:.

Now you can smash all the windows that you want
All you really need are some friends and a rock
Throwing a brick never felt so damn good
Smash more glass
Scream with a laugh
And wallow with the crowds
Watch them kicking peoples' ass

But you get to the place
Where the real slavedrivers live
It's walled off by the riot squad
Aiming guns right at your head
--->>>So you turn right around
--->>>And play right into their hands
--->>>And set your own neighbourhood
--->>>Burning to the ground instead

[Chorus]
Riot-the unbeatable high
Riot-shoots your nerves to the sky
--->>>Riot-playing right into their hands
--->>>Tomorrow you're homeless
--->>>Tonight it's a blast

Get your kicks in quick
They're callin' the national guard
Now could be your only chance
To torch a police car

Climb the roof, kick the siren in
And jump and yelp for joy
Quickly-dive back in the crowd
Slip away, now don't get caught

Let's loot the spiffy hi-fi store
Grab as much as you can hold
Pray your full arms don't fall off
Here comes the owner with a gun

[Chorus]

*shit*

The barricades spring up from nowhere
Cops in helmets line the lines
Shotguns prod into your bellies
Their trigger fingers want an excuse
Now

The raging mob has lost its nerve
There's more of us but who goes first
No one dares to cross the line
The cops know that they've won

It's all over but not quite
The pigs have just begun to fight
They club your heads, kick your teeth
Police can riot all that they please

[Chorus]

--->>>Tomorrow you're homeless
--->>>Tonight it's a blast

U da man! I'm so glad you're around more often! While the klieg lights
focus on you, my activities get to continue being ignored until once
again the appropriate time comes for me to drop a really politically
incorrect boner and get smushed by the ruling elite.

Speaking of Smush, what time is that Lakers game?

p.s. You know sometimes those girls in Manila and Bangalore who handle
the planet's technical support now, are HOT.
