Approx. 4 million immigrants (and their families) packed in gloomy
concrete ghettos, with an 30% unemployment rate (40% to 50% for the
young), and increasing local crime and violence: how could it end up
another way?

I (like many of the film-loving French) was shocked by 'La Haine'* ten
years ago. Nothing much seems to have changed :-(

Only ten more years of ghetto-isation...

Wow, you mean the U.S. doesn't have the market cornered
on racial inequality? You'd never know by our news coverage.
This has been page five stuff over here, maybe a small front
page headline off and on.

For all the finger-wagging we get about things like this you'd
think someone would pounce on this opportunity to point out
we're not the only "civilized" western nation where this occurs.
Maybe give a little more history on why these people were
ready to riot after two teens get killed while hiding from police.

Instead it's pretty low on the radar over here, right next to the
stories like "Oh, five more soldiers died today, just so you know."

It amazes me what they put on the front page instead sometimes.
The latest update on all the local politics, mostly. The important
stuff? Put it behind the story about the mayor's wife's DUI...
