I've never tried those speeds in my F-Cars. But my Viper with Roe
supercharger has been to 170MPH on the highway with factory rubber,
more than once.

As far as legal ramifications, he would be in trouble.
At that speeds he doesn't need to worry about maiming or killing
anyone. Because he will be dead also if he hits anything. Inertia is
a big problem at that speed.
Most Exotic rentals have tattle boxes. So if he survived the test, the
rentor would se the speed and he would be in violation of the contract
he legally entered into.

Not to doubt the mighty Viper, but how reliable is the speedo?

Were you alone on the road? How long did you sustain that speed? Was it in
the U.S.?

Of course, another issue is debris in the road - I imagine if he runs across
a shredded semi tire at that speed, he's toast. Of course, we've all seen
all kinds of crap in the road that isn't supposed to be there. Coolers,
ladders, etc. I imagine he's not going to see it in time especially if it's
at night, and a good chance he'd overcorrect and wreck even if he did.

Ah so..

That brings us back to the idea of a minor even being able to rent such a
car. As far as I know they can't legally enter into a contract without
parental consent.

Open freeway. I know it's irresponsible, I'm not looking for a
scolding here. My car club drives the distance to check for debris and
then post lookouts on either end and do the runs. Even in a supercar,
it takes some time to wind it up to speed. Once you get over 130 you
are really beginning to fight drag. Top speeds are held for probably
not even 10 seconds. But it does feel a heck of a lot longer.
Your not going to see debris before you can slow down and you sure
can't panic brake or panic steer at that speed. Your looking far out
on the horizon, or your gonna be in big trouble.

I know of no exotic rental that is below 25 and you have to have more
than a basic insurance policy. My policy had to be able to cover at
least $200,000US for a Gallardo rental with a $5000 deposit. Basically
your deposit covers their deductable on their policy. You policy is
there to cover any damages above and beyond. I don't know about a
younger person having such a policy. If they did, Mommie and Daddy
could probably just buy them a supercar :-)

The contract is also implicit in it's wording that only the rentor can
drive the car. No renting and letting another person drive.

Most, maybe, but certainly not all. Some years ago I rented an NSX
from an exotic rental place in Las Vegas, and put 800 mostly desert
miles on it in 3 days. The rental agreement said there was at tattle
device on the car and that I'd be nailed if I did more than, I think,
80 mph in it. I can most certainly assure you that if there was one
in that car, then it wasn't working.

There are more cars that can go at 180 mph than cars that can turn at 180 mph.
The same goes for drivers.

Fake driver's licenses are available on any college campus. Probably not a
problem for high school kids to get their hands on. Difficult to explain
after the accident, though.

Hell, I'd be happy just to rent a car with a manual transmission. Even
A Ford Escort or something. I just came back from a week of driving some
horrible Chevy SUV on travel and I was going out of my mind because I'd
go for the clutch and there would be nothing there.

Not gonna go big with the cops when they run it either. Remember, this kid's
(theoretical) goal is to get caught so he can eventually have the ticket
with the speed on it to show to everyone.

'Course when he's in the slammer with Bubba awaiting arraignment, he might
question the wisdom of his quest.

Then you're an idiot. Plain and simple. How sad.

<<At that speeds he doesn't need to worry about maiming or killing

You don't always get to die, but if you did, that wouldn't take away
your responsibility for killing someone else.

<<I know it's irresponsible>>

No, it's criminal, unethical, arrogant and just plain stupid.

<<I'm not looking for a scolding here.>>

Yeah, well I'm not looking to run into (or be run into by) some
jackhole who thinks he is so sure he knows what he's doing behind the
wheel that he will flout the law and common sense in such a flagrant
and obscene way.

<<My car club drives the distance to check for debris and then post

So all your friends are idiots too. Figures.

<<Even in a supercar, it takes some time to wind it up to speed.>>

Your Viper isn't a *supercar* by any stretch of the imagination.
Appreciate it for what it is. Don't blow things out of proportion.

<< Your not going to see debris before you can slow down and you sure
can't panic brake or panic steer at that speed.>>

You shouldn't be doing anything in a *panic* at those speeds, but that
just goes to illustrate why it's idiotic to do what you do and why you
aren't skilled enough to be doing it anyway.

C.
