The output shaft on my Sons auto trany (4.2 ltr V6 2 wheel drive) has up and down play in it and clunks on hard acceleration or quick let off of gas under load. Doe's anyone know if the output shaft can be replaced without trany removal like some of the old Chevy's could? or does this involve a full rebuild? If it's a big job could someone recommend a good shop in West Edmonton that is honest and reasonable. Thanks Tom reply to group or to tmvogt at telusplanet dot net |

You could try replacing the extension housing output shaft bushing. It might be badly worn. Pull it out with a very small slide hammer or sometimes you can just drive a new one on and let the old one "ride" the output shaft. It probably won't do any harm. If that fails then you might want to consider replacing the shaft, but this is the cheaper and less labor intensive path to start with. You will only need to buy a new bushing and housing seal. You might want to check and see if the end of the drive shaft going into the extension housing needs replacing. Best of luck! chevyguy wrote: The output shaft on my Sons auto trany (4.2 ltr V6 2 wheel drive) has up and down play in it and clunks on hard acceleration or quick let off of gas under load.
