Default My 2004 F150 stall's out in the cold weather - 01-28-2007 , 08:50 PM

It's been very cold the last two days and yesterday morning when I
starting the truck, the engining made a clanging sound and eventually
warmed up to a point where the noise stopped and it ideld ok.
But when I went to drive the truck it started stalling out when I
brake to turn or take my foot off the gas. It will reve when starting
but not at any consistent RPM. Also the check engine amber light
stays illuminated.

Fuel line, fuel injectors??? Anyone have any suggestions and
solutions.

thanks,

Al in Canada

The clanking sound during a cold start could be piston slap
(unlikely), but it is must likely you have an oil filter with a leaky
anti-drain back valve. To address the clanking sound, I'd suggest
changing the oil and using a filter with a good quality anti-drain
back valve (like a Motorcraft FL-820S). A leaky anti-drain back valve
allows the oil to drain back out of the OHC chain tensioners and they
and the valve lifter can clatter until the oil pressure is restored.
Be sure you use the recommended out (5W20).

The idle problem is most likely related to the IAC Motor (Idle Air
Control Motor). These have a tendency to be contaminated with gooey
black stuff. When this happens they don't function properly and the
truck won't idle. The IAC is a chrome cylinder about 2.5 inches long
attached to the intake manifold by two screws., There is an electrical
connector on one end. You can take it off and try cleaning it with
some intake manifold cleaner, but I usually just replace them (~$50
US).
