What is the in-line filter on my tranny for?

Group: alt.trucks.ford Date: Mon, Jun 23, 2003, 11:44am From:
moomesa (AT) INVALIDfnbnet (DOT) net (Jeepers)

My 99 F-350 SD CC 4x4 Automatic has an inline filter (or something) on
the return line from the tranny cooler.

Why?
#2
Where do I get a replacement?
#3
Do I really need it?
#4
Can I just install a stainless tube in it's place?

Thought?

Ideas?
===============================
I have a question for You......
How do you know it's on the return line?

==ANSWERS to the test==

1) someone didn't know any better than
to put one on it.

2) any "do-it-yerselfer will buy it" parts
store..

3) no

4) yes

Thanks, I think I will. Off-hand, you wouldn't know the tubing type and
size?

I imagine it's steel 5/16". A short length and two compression unions
should do it.

There's a magnet in the pan. And it's not worth the restriction in the
cooler. They are restricted enough with the 5/16" line.
