Default 2001 ford escape sometimes difficult to start - 06-23-2005 , 06:24 PM

My wife is driving a 2001 ford escape with 42,000 miles. About every other
week she has a tough time getting the car to start without holding the
accelerator. Any idea's ? I have had the fuel injectors cleaned serviced
at the dealer at 36,000 miles. Thanks.

You should *never* have to touch the accelerator when starting a
fuel-injected
car. Does the engine idle normally all of the time once it is running? No
surging or near-stalling?

Does the car run OK once you do get it started, all of the time?

Is it hard to start if it has been sitting for several hours, or just a few?

Did this problem precede your getting the injectors cleaned? If not, did
it start happening shortly afterwards?

Your problem could be anything from a dirty throttle body plate, to a
bad throttle position sensor or idle speed control, to a weak fuel pump
or pressure regulator or leaky fuel inj that lets the fuel pressure drop off
too quickly
when the car is off, or to a faulty crankshaft or camshaft position sensor.

But it's unlikely to be all of these, so don't just let someone throw parts
at the car at your expense.

Bob

Bob:

Thanks for the reply. Once started yes the car idles and runs fine fine.
It does happen when the car sits at least 5 hours, but does not happen all
the time. I dont think it did it prior to having the fuel injection work
performed (they say that they did clean the throttle body plate) Concur
on the throwing parts, my biggest concern is just that. Thanks again..
