I'll bet if you ask some of us that are still alive today because of the
ability of the drug manufactures to make enough money to continue to develop
all of those life saving drugs, you will get a different prospective. Twenty
years ago people were dying of things that today can be prevented and even
cured by the new drugs. Once the scientist discover what actually causes
cancer the drug companies will be quick to offer a drug to prevent or cure
cancer as well.

It's never a better drug, but psychologically, some patients insist they
can only take brand-only. But you hit the nail on the head. I'd
forgotten about those 'conferences' the pharmaceutical companies pay
for - it's ridiculous, but you're right; the temptation is too great,
and many docs probably figure their resistance won't make any
difference.

And I hate the fact that big drug companies started advertising
prescription-only drugs in 1996. I think that is just wrong. They
are trying to make people demand a drug that only a doctor should
prescribe. The commercials for Enzyte are bad enough. Do they still
horsewhip criminals? These guys should be publicly whipped but they
might enjoy it too much.

Actually I don't mind the ads for stuff like Enzyte and Cialis - those are
not generic, and you certainly can live without them, so advertising
actually makes sense. (Yeah, I know; some guys *can't* live without it
;-)).

I used to have a cartoon that showed a woman sitting on an exam table,
waiting to see the doctor. She was reading a sign that said, "There will
be an additional fee for answering questions about things you read on the
internet."
