We have a 1992 Ford Mustang Convertible with a 2.3L L4 FI OHV engine and an automatic tranny. We love this old car and really hate to sell it. It has always been very dependable and fun to drive. We only drive it with the top down, which is only a day or two each month. We have recently purchased a newer convertible and will sell this one shortly. The ONLY problem that I have never been able to understand, or fix, is a "clunk" when you start it up cold, then shift into either drive or reverse. You hear a clunk noise similar to what you would expect if a U-joint was really bad. I have checked the U-joints, and there is NO play in them. Is this a common problem, and how do I fix it? Is there an adjustment to the transmission that will let me "take up the slack"? Another unrelated question: Where was this little 2.3L engine made? It's been a REALLY solid one. I am guessing that it was made by Mazda, but not sure. THANKS in advance! Gene |

I pulled the rear-end plate & it is DEFINITELY the rear-end. There is a LOT of play in the center gears of the rear-end. If anyone has a URL to the steps needed to re-shim the rear end of this 2.3L 1992 Ford Mustang with an automatic tranny, PLEASE post the link. I have a Chilton's, but can't find it today. |

I think I have the information you need depending on whether you have a 7.5" or 8.5" ring gear. However, I have it on a CD and don't know how to efficiently get the information to you. Why don't you download the file yourself and burn your own CD? Doesn't cost a penny and the file for the 92 covers all Ford cars, not just the Mustang. These are supposedly Ford shop manuals, not Chilton's or Haynes. http://fordcds.com/ You will need some sort of CD burning software such as Nero or Easy CD Creator. Hope this helps you. -- Mortimer Schnerd, RN mschnerdatcarolina.rr.com |

| http://fordcds.com/ Service Temporarily Unavailable The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. Additionally, a 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. is that site usually up? |

Additionally, a 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. is that site usually up? Yes, it's usually up. The first time I ever saw that message was a moment ago when I tried it. I don't know what's up with them. I've downloaded from them a couple of times maybe a year apart and they were always up before. Try again tomorrow. More to the point, why didn't you try when I first posted it? That must have been 2-3 weeks ago. Surely they haven't been down all this time? I know they were up when I posted it because I looked specifically. |
