Default New qualifying format - 03-11-2006 , 08:45 AM

Well, managed to get home in time to watch most of today's qualifying,
and thoroughly enjoyed it. I won't comment on the result, I haven't
put "spoiler" in the subject line. ;o)

Excellent stuff, compared with last year... okay, so last year's was
unwatchable, so it's not saying much, but nice to see *something* in
F1 going in the right direction!

I didn't even mind the "circling over Heathrow" moments (thanks
Martin!) as it gave me a chance to get used to the new driver/team
colour schemes and work out who everybody was. )

Here in the US on SpeedTV they did not give an initial run-down of
teams and their livery. It would have been helpful for this, the first
event of the year.

Would anyone else find it useful if they put a little graphic (perhaps
using the "ALO" designation for Alonso like they do for many things) of
who is out on the track? Perhaps with a color denoting hot lap or not
(say, based upon first sector times). Just a strip along one side of
the screen would be great. You could tell the TV was struggling to
decide who to follow.

cheers, JV

I was very doubtful about the new qualifying routine, but
after seeing it this morning (US time), I must admit I found
it VERY entertaining.

Which probably means they'll change it again soon. :-)

I second that, it was nice to watch, however as an F1 fan and working in motorsports I still haven't figured the "fuel rule" for the 3rd session, what's the point of driving to empty your tank to be allowed to fil it back afterwards to the level it was before you drove to empty it.

On seconds thoughts it must be quite frustrating for the driver who has made the fastest time of the session to be 4th on the starting grid...

The general idea of a "shootout" is great but why make it so complicated with the fuel, why not tell the guys that they CAN reload the fuel tanks after qualifying so everybody can make as many laps as they want with lowfuel, come in the pîts, refuel for 3 laps and start again, and when qualifying is over everybody fills the tank and starts th race with a full tank (which would have the additional benefit of removing 1 pit stop fromthe race)

Additionally there was an interesting (for once) comment on French TV (who is usually kissing Flavio's ass all day long) about the rule changes decided by Bernie "To please the TVs" and it seems that Bernie is NEVER, EVER asking ANY TV about their opinion and using the same excuse to change the rules to what HE thinks is the best.

Once Bernie comes to FIA and teams saying "we need to change this to please TVs" everybody says "if it's for TV then it's OK" but as far as FrenchTV is concerned they are really NOT happy about the current rules and NOBODY asked them (or any other TV it seems).

What would have been nice would have been them using some of the extra
real estate on the screen,
snip

I'm sure many would agree... I still do all my telly watching on a
tiny portable lurking in the corner of the sitting room. I can just
about see the cars. ;o)

It appears I am alone in liking last year's format better. Saturday
certainly produced plenty of activity, but it all seems pretty pointless
if it's impossible to follow what's going on.

During the first two sessions we desperately need a full- or nearly
full-time graphic showing the bottom seven with their times (or absence
thereof) so we can tell who's in danger of not advancing and what time
they need to set to move up.

During the final session they ought to be able to show the full current
order with times, since there are only 10.

I have to disagree, I'm afraid I never really got on with any form of
single-lap qualifying, and much preferred this knock-out style.

The on-line timing thing at <http://www.formula1.com> makes following it
much, much easier - though it did konk out near the end of the first
session, at the same time as the commentators lost their screens.

And we all (including the TV folk) have to get used to watching the
slowest drivers, not the quickest ones, during the first half - which
does feel a little strange.

Ian

At least, if you are a spectator (personally, and _not_ watching TV) you get
extra car mileage to see, to photograph, etc.

The first two sessions were great, although I was suprised the top teams
didn't learn the lesson from session 1: i.e. get a banker lap in, just in
case. Otherwise the knockout sessions were great! I'm glkad, being one of
the fools who voted for this format of qualifying in that survey.

That'll be session 3: the "see who can burn the most fuel to get a hot alp
in at the end" session. WTF is that all about? It just seems so... wrong.
Qually should be about going as fast as you can, not about wasting as much
fuel as you can. I understand why the FIA set the rules up this way - it
does after all keep maximum cars on track for maximum time. It just feels
silly.

Well, sure - except the endless qualifying revisions are generally sold
as being for the TV audience, and none of the folks who have posted
(here and elsewhere) approvingly about the new formats have indicated
they were connecting from Bahrain.

So - are the people who enjoyed this doing so despite not knowing what
(if anything) is significant about what they're seeing, or do they
somehow keep on top of the session as it develops?
