Introduction for New Readers
============================

I have posted these amateur analyses for several years now, in an attempt
to allow comparisons between Grands Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful observations it is essential to produce
these stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have made
several "rules" that I try to follow for each race. Please note before
posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that it
probably has been excluded because of my "rules". The rules are outlined
in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.


This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www.fia.com, www.forix.com or www.autosport.com/f1/
on race day or the following day. The original chart remains copyright of the
FIA. Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely unofficial.


Disclaimer
==========

For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will call "genuine"
passing manoeuvres, which means that I exclude:

a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping/unlapping manoeuvres
c) any changes during the first lap

Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious, c) is because although lap one is often the
best opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of
the race, and so, for the purpose of comparing races with other races and
seasons with other seasons, it is simpler to exclude lap one completely.
For the purposes of this analysis a pit stop encompasses the slowing down
lap and the out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to
the stopper slowing down or speeding up.

Note: Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is
held until the start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto
the lap chart. I try to ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap
chart, even if it was seen on TV - in this way I try to keep the numbers
as consistent as possible.

Brian your statistics are GREAT.

Is there a way to get some "older" stats meaning PRE-refueling era when if you wanted to pass someone you had to do it ON THE TRACK and not in the pits ?

Obviously yesterday's race was so special that everybody is enthusiastic but look at the stats of the French and US GP's and don't bee too conident for Turkey later on this month, the chances of rain there are quite minimal :-(

So far I haven't started.

However, I did do a couple of old races. One of them was the 1983 Long Beach
GP, where John Watson won with team-mate Niki Lauda second after they started
from 22nd & 23rd on the grid. Both drivers passed 13 other cars during the
race, and that excludes lap one where Watson passed two more and Lauda one.
The total for the race was 84. That's using my usual overtaking rules, but
I don't have the complete info that I normally have, so probably some of
those passes would be rejected.

The other race I have analysed was the 1985 European GP - this attracted my
attention partly because it was Nigel Mansell's first win and I happened to
be there. The race total was 55.

Other people have done some work using similar rules to me, which they have
kindly passed on to me. The average passes per race in 1985/86/87 was
46/43/40.
