Having googled duncan f1 driver I found this... From grandprix.com: Name: Duncan Hamilton Nationality: Great Britain Date of birth: April 30, 1920 - Cork, Ireland Date of death: May 13, 1994 - Sherbourne, Dorset A rumbustious Surrey-based garage owner who flew for the RAF during the war in Lysanders, Hamilton raced a Talbot-Lago and an HWM in a handful of Championship Grands Prix. He also won Le Mans in 1953 sharing a works Jaguar C-type with his close friend Tony Rolt. http://www.grandprix.com/gpe/drv-hamdun.html |

A somewhat larger-than-life character, his exploits are covered in his book "Touch Wood" which is hilarious....and from an era when even F1 drivers did not take themselves at all seriously. His partner in long-distance racing was major Tony Rolt, who was a bombardier (iirc) with RAF Bomber Command. Add to that Jaguar team manager Lofty England also being ex-RAF, it is easy to understand the intensity of those Jaguar vs Mercedes-Benz battles at Le Mans. Doc |

From: "Allen" <none (AT) this (DOT) one Championship Grands Prix. He also won Le Mans in 1953 sharing a works Jaguar C-type with his close friend Tony Rolt. And as they say "if I recall correctly" (not too certain this time of night) he was fired for winning (at least according to his book which I read so many years ago... 1960?). He was supposed to come second and, while in the lead, they hung out the "slow" sign from the pit to allow #1 to cathch up and pass. He discovered (as many aspiring racing drivers have also learned) that braking earlier (Mulsanne straight) actually improved his lap times resulting in the win. And in being fired almost immediately. The funny, I suppose, part was that before the race, on Friday, they thought they didn't qualify (or something.. cannot remember) so consoled themselves by consuming vast quantities of wine all night. It was only as the race approached that they found out that they were actually in the race and had to try and, umm, establish focus. Different times. Keith |
