Button who?

Now seriously, Button is an average driver, in the
same league as Barrichello, Ralf, Jarno, Webber
... textbook example of the midfield driver. I
might be wrong, but that's my opinion.

Mike

I remember thinking that Button was the new Prost.
But then again I remember thinking that Ralf Schumacher was the new
Mansell.

.....while over at the Old Farts Dept., I wondered if Hamilton was the new
Duncan.

lol!

Having googled duncan f1 driver I found this...

From grandprix.com:

Name: Duncan Hamilton
Nationality: Great Britain
Date of birth: April 30, 1920 - Cork, Ireland
Date of death: May 13, 1994 - Sherbourne, Dorset

A rumbustious Surrey-based garage owner who flew for the RAF during the war
in Lysanders, Hamilton raced a Talbot-Lago and an HWM in a handful of
Championship Grands Prix. He also won Le Mans in 1953 sharing a works
Jaguar C-type with his close friend Tony Rolt.

Well done! A somewhat larger-than-life character, his exploits are covered
in his book "Touch Wood" which is hilarious....and from an era when even F1
drivers did not take themselves at all seriously. His partner in
long-distance racing was major Tony Rolt, who was a bombardier (iirc) with
RAF Bomber Command. Add to that Jaguar team manager Lofty England also being
ex-RAF, it is easy to understand the intensity of those Jaguar vs
Mercedes-Benz battles at Le Mans.

And as they say "if I recall correctly" (not too certain this time of night)
he was fired for winning (at least according to his book which I read so
many years ago... 1960?). He was supposed to come second and, while in the
lead, they hung out the "slow" sign from the pit to allow #1 to cathch up
and pass. He discovered (as many aspiring racing drivers have also learned)
that braking earlier (Mulsanne straight) actually improved his lap times
resulting in the win. And in being fired almost immediately.

The funny, I suppose, part was that before the race, on Friday, they thought
they didn't qualify (or something.. cannot remember) so consoled themselves
by consuming vast quantities of wine all night. It was only as the race
approached that they found out that they were actually in the race and had
to try and, umm, establish focus.

Different times.

Getting OT here but, "Jaguar team manager Lofty England" - if I hadn't
googled that I would have *sworn* you made that one up Doc!
Plenty of reading material for later cheers

The #1 car in this instance was the Moss/Walker car.
Well I never..

And tragically, Peter Walker (who won Le Mans for Jaguar in 1951) died an
alcoholic derelict in the East End of London!

Reims 12 hours 1956...he won against Lofty's team orders...and was promptly
sacked from the works team.
Which did not keep him from buying ex-works racing Jaguars, running them
very successfully as a privateer.

He discovered (as many aspiring racing drivers have also learned)

Er, no, not quite. His 1953 win at Le Mans was on merit,
helped by disc brakes, of course. Also, that memorable 2nd to the
Trintignant/Gonzales Ferrari at the debut of the D-type, in 1954.

Story somewhat embroidered in subsequent years by Mr Hamilton, although
Jaguar no 18 was indeed d/q-ed for some hours after final practice, due to
Jaguar getting the no 18 and no 18T (the training car) out on track at the
same time.

LOL....I know that Alexander Hesket once tried to get a black lady to
accompany him and Mr Hunt to their hotel room, claiming said lady was his
sister, or so the story goes )
