Default Fake Ferrari! - 06-23-2006 , 08:22 AM

It's no longer just designer clothes, watches and sunglasses that get
pirated, now racing cars are being targeted too.

Summarised from an article in today's Italian newspaper La Repubblica

http://www.repubblica.it/2006/06/mot...-f1-false.html

The Italian police has dicovered two fake Ferrari F2002. The two cars
are aesthetically identical to the original racing cars, but the
engine and mechanical parts have not yet been examined.

The police followed a trail that started with the publication of
photos on a fan website (doesn't say which one) and led to the
discovery of the first fake F2002 in a former Ferrari fan club in
Rome. The car was being rented out for events such as fan meetings,
expos etc.

The second fake F2002 was found in a car showroom in Bari.

Further investigation led to the identification of a Sicilian
businessman resident in the town of Trapani as the person who built
the two fake Ferrari.

The two cars are to be taken to Maranello where they will be examined
to determine the origin of the materials used in building them.

Were they built as show cars? Do they break in half if you touch a tyre
wall?

During the late 80s when collector car values became truly insane a
small cottage industry in Italy began cranking out replicas of some of
the early Ferraris, GTOs, 275 LMs, SWB Berlinetta's etc.

Some made no attempt to deceive, but others sold fakes as the genuine
article. Some very serious money changed hands before the truth
finally came to light. Some of these cars are such faithful and
skillful recreations that they have acquired substantial value in
their own right.

The Italian police and customs are destroying a lot of 'fake'
classics - sadly including a couple of "replicas" with a lot of "real"
bits in them. I think at least one Lancia D50 rep (or something
equally mouthwatering) has been crushed in Italy along with a couple
of Maserati sports racers.

Everyone knows they're replicas, they makes no claim to be "authentic",
(and in several cases there are no 'originals' left, which makes the
destruction of honest replicas even more perplexing and annoying.

Mind you the worst thing I ever saw was a RAM-Cosworth painted to look
like an '85 Ferrari.... actually, no, it might be marginally less bad
than the March 85B F3000 tricked up to look like a Senna-era Camel
Lotus

I was watching reruns of the old TV show Miami Vice the other night.
It is pretty funny to watch the show today. They had a black 365
Daytona convertible which was a fairly cheezy replica. They used
really tight shots to hide the car but you could tell the scale was
wrong. Crockett and Tubbs faces were almost in the windsheild and the
car was small. They used a Corvette chassis.

Apparently, Ferrari donated a Testarossa (probably a write off what a
dog) because the show gave them publicity but the Scuderia were tired
of the "fake" Ferrari. Eventually, director Michael Mann blew up
Crockett's "Ferrari" convertible.
