Ecclestone wants Asian GP2 series

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has expressed a desire to form a
GP2 winter series in Asia, this week's Autosport reports.

The series could use the current Dallara-built cars used in the main
championship, as they are coming towards the end of their three-year
cycle and will be made redundant at the end of this season.

"I want to make sure that we bring GP2 to Asia in the winter,"
Ecclestone told Autosport during the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend.

An Asian championship would enable the existing GP2 teams to sell their
cars, and it could provide Asian drivers with a strong training ground
before they switch to racing in Europe.

"Hopefully we will get to find a few Asian drivers through the exposure.
You can't just pick anyone out of a saloon car," Ecclestone added.

"Really, we have to run a championship in Asia at a higher level, and
then for sure we're going to find more drivers."

I'd like to see it too, esp if it extended to Australia for a round or two
(nice to see something show up the V8 Stupersnores for the poor show it is).

either because they're mostly held during the winter 'dry times' for racing in
the northern hemisphere when every red-blooded racing fiend is aching for a

They did show EJ in pre race, but not a word on Bernie. If I had
the money, and the power I would buyout A1 eyes closed. A1 being
sold / funded by Bernie and act as a Asian GP2 is ridiculous.
