Default Most Consecutive (1950-2006) - Top 10 - Part 4 - D N F's - 05-06-2007 , 12:30 PM

Part 4 - Most consecutive DNF's

Needs no further explanation, struggling car, tough times... setting up
a record of most consecutive DNF's (many reasons). Not a single entry
from 2000+ here, new age cars look pretty reliable as compared to the
days from the past! Haven't seen/know about most of the entries from the
top half, and what led to such a performance...

Note:
*** - Data is missing model info.

I don't have data on DNF sequences, although the opposite might be more
interesting - consecutive finishes. This is the top 10 from my files -
last updated about a year ago.

24 Michael Schumacher 2001-03 Ferrari

18 Michael Schumacher 2003-04 Ferrari

17 Niki Lauda 1975-76 Ferrari
17 Ayrton Senna 1988-89 McLaren [1]
17 Jean Alesi 2000-01 Prost/Jordan [3]
17 Rubens Barrichello 2003-04 Ferrari

16 Albert Ascari 1951-53 Ferrari
16 Tiago Monteiro 2005 Jordan [8]

15 Carlos Reutemann 1980-81 Williams

14 Juan Manuel Fangio 1953-55 Maserati/Mercedes [4]
14 Alain Prost 1993 Williams [5]

Notes:

[1] Includes one DNF where he was also classified as a finisher.
[3] Alesi's run ended in his last ever GP - if he had finished that race he
would have set a (then) new record of 18.
[4] Fangio's sequence includes one GP where he took over a team-mate's car.
[5] Prost's sequence was the last 14 GPs of his career.
[8] The first 16 GPs of his career.

Well I didn't mean to suggest that THAT was the ONLY update required,
hence the "obvious".

I'll expand the updated list to the top 20:

24 Michael Schumacher 2001-03 Ferrari

23 Rubens Barrichello 2005-06 Ferrari/Honda

22 Fernando Alonso 2005-06 McLaren

18 Michael Schumacher 2003-04 Ferrari

17 Niki Lauda 1975-76 Ferrari
17 Ayrton Senna 1988-89 McLaren [1]
17 Jean Alesi 2000-01 Prost/Jordan [3]
17 Rubens Barrichello 2003-04 Ferrari

16 Albert Ascari 1951-53 Ferrari
16 Tiago Monteiro 2005 Jordan [8]

15 Carlos Reutemann 1980-81 Williams
15 Ralf Schumacher 2005-06 Toyota [10]

14 Juan Manuel Fangio 1953-55 Maserati/Mercedes [4]
14 Alain Prost 1993 Williams [5]
14 Jenson Button 2005-06 BAR/Honda

13 Jim Clark 1963-64 Lotus [2]
13 Denny Hulme 1972-73 McLaren [6]
13 Emerson Fittipaldi 1973-74 Lotus/McLaren [1]
13 Jody Scheckter 1979 Ferrari [7]
13 Eddie Irvine 1999 Ferrari
13 Ralf Schumacher 2002-03 Williams
13 Felipe Massa 2004-05 Sauber
13 Michael Schumacher 2006 Ferrari

Notes:

1. Includes one DNF where he was also classified as a finisher.
2. Includes two DNFs where he was also classified as a finisher.
3. Alesi's sequence ended in his last ever GP - if he had finished that race
he would have set a then new record of 18.
4. Fangio's sequence includes one GP where he took over a team-mate's car.
5. Prost's sequence was achieved in the last 14 GPs of his career.
6. Hulme's two sequences were separated by a single DNF - he finished 22 of 23
races.
7. Scheckter's sequence may be expanded to 15 IF a DNS is excluded.
8. The first 16 GPs of his career.
10. Ralf Schumacher's sequence was interrupted by the US GP - which he missed due to
injury.

23 instances above - 12 of them since 2000, including the top four. I've researched
all instances of 10 or more - there are two current/open sequences which are
almost on the list, Rubens in on nine consecutive finishes and Fisi is on eight.
There are another 12 instances of 12/11/10 since 2000 too.

Brian

Interesting question. It may take me a while :-)

I suspect that there may be quite a few with a single start who actually
finished the race.

We have two new boys who have three starts and no DNFs - Hamilton &
Kovalainen.

There is no consistent definition of what counted as a "finish". Most
data came from Steve Small's "Grand Prix Who's Who", 3rd edition (2000).

NC - Not Classified (technically not a "finish")

F2 - drove in a separate F2 class

shared - either took over another car or handed his car to another driver.
(those who handed over their car didn't actually "finish", but I'm
including them here anyway)

"One off" drives were quite common until the mid 'seventies, but have been
almost unheard of since then. Except for these few:

Jean-Louis Schlesser 1 11 1988
Toshio Suzuki 2 12/14 1993
Roland Ratzenberger 1 11 1994
Nicholas Kiesa 5 12/13/12/11/16 2003
Timo Glock 4 7/15/15/15 2004
