It's really weird, I've been following F1 for 30 years+ (must be as I
remember James Hunt winning) but I have never seen the fascination with
Senna. He was a good driver, but I can't see the idolism (is that even a
word) that some people hold him in. Seems to me he was in the right car
at the right time which made him look good, bit like Hamilton the last
couple of years.

Senna was uncompromisingly the best qualy driver I've ever seen. He still
holds the number of polls as a record, the only one that MS didn't beat.

For that? He was exciting to watch. As a driver? Not as exciting as
Mansell, but certainly more fun to see than Prost, who I found incredibly
boring to watch race.

"Idolised" - dunno which word to use either!

I like 'chargers'. And it was rare to see Senna do that, unless he was
qualifying the car. He had a bag of dirty tricks, loved to mouth off (but
back in those days Mansell wasn't a Nun either). I was at the point in '94
when he joined Williams that I thought he would be a 4 timer and driving that
car was "gifting" him the DWC. But he never scored a single point with the
Williams in the two races before his untimely death. He seemed to have
mellowed by then. The interviews I read with him seemed to demonstrate a
less controversial attitude. A surprise to me because he was always such a
prick.

I'll agree to differ - sorry, but I thought that was Mansell's role. Was
Senna's European GP drive at Donington in the wet not a charge?

It was a charge, as much as a charge in the rain could be.

I was very happy to see that race again back in 1993 when SpeedTV was doing
Formula One Decade.

Over all though, Senna wasn't near the charger as Nige.

But again, if the driver doesn't have the car or the team, he's a nobody.

Nige blew chunks in 1988 when he had the Williams-Judd, Senna and Prost were
on turbo and won every race, save for the Ferrari win that year.

Look at poor Lewis Hamilton this year! He's "Lewis who?"

Idolisation?

I was going to say idolatry - but it's a weird word to use out of a
religious context.

You are completely right.
Even to mention Mansell in the same breath as Senna is ridiculous.
Clark now, that's a different matter.

We can most certainly agree on that. Jimmy did things that should have
taken my breath away too - but he did them in such a calm manner!
