There's a school of thought that says that the Renault engine is more
fuel efficient than the other F1 engines, and so a car running a
Renault engine next year will have an advantage in that it will carry
a smaller fuel load.

Hmmm, unlikely. That Mercedes is pretty mean on fuel, too. Maybe
Renault need to get Mecachrome involved again?

How many constructors have built their own engine? Answers on a
postcard, please. Brian?

I can recall so far: Maserati, Ferrari, Vanwall, Cosworth (yes, they
did build a car) BRM, Alfa Romeo, Lamborghini (hang on, did they make
the chassis? probably not) Renault, Matra, Honda, BMW, Porsche... There
must be more.

Anyone?

Mercedes-Benz? Or is that going back too far?

I thought they'd continued to build the Renault F1 engines.

The question was "How many constructors have built their own engine? ".
IIRC the Brabham team first used the Repco engine in the 1966 season.
