The Luffield complex is silly, admittedly - I like the new Becketts,
though.

Luffield is a nice place to watch the cars close-up and to see some
interesting outbraking manoeuvres (in fact it's somewhere I like to
stand for BTCC or GTs or whatever),
There's also a very good photographic position there for the amateur, one at
Farm too..

Couldn't give a toss about Silverstone, the "proper" Silverstone died in
'91 (although you could argue that most of the damage was done in '86 or
even arguably '75.) The entire place is just a mess of concrete and
fences now, it's got all the atmosphere of a damp handkerchief.
That's the thing, all it has ever been is a road around an airfield...
hardly charismatic!

It does remain the site of the first ever F1 Grand Prix, the first half
of the lap is awesome, and without the Luffield complex would be a hell
of a lot better. The only thing it's really missing is elevation
changes (it's an airfield remember!).

Funny thing is, Brands Hatch is so much better than Silverstone, but
Bernie had one of his tantrums...

Be careful what you wish for... who knows what they'd inflict on Brands
Hatch in the course of bringing it up to modern F1 standards.

Ever been to Roborough? When I was doing my initial flying training
there the 'planes taking-off disappeared down a dip until only the top
planes could be seen, and if one of the trainees hit a bit hard on
landing the oleo-struts would bounce the 'plane back into the air,
which was quite an impressive sight as it bounced gradually into view.

It's an airfield on a hillside - so it's got elevation, just not very
noticable.

Nothing to do with Bernie - everything to do with local council planning
laws.

Don't forget that Bernie sold the GB race rights to Nichola Foulston and
Brands Hatch Leisure from 2002 - the intention being that the British GP
would be at Brands. Foulston applied for planning permission to upgrade the
circuit to F1 standards and, in the meantime, sold BHL to Octagon Motorsport
(aka Interpublic Advertising) for rather more than it was worth - Octagon,
presumably, assumed planning permission would be a formality.

The problem is that there isn't room to expand the run-off areas to F1's
requirements - in fact it's so unsafe, now, that even F3000 has refused to
race there since 1991. Planning permission was turned down, as was an
appeal, so Octagon were forced to do a deal with Silverstone.

The GB race rights are now back with the BDRC and Brands Hatch (and the
other former BHL circuits) is now owned by a group headed by Jonathan Palmer
who picked them up for a song after Interpublic decided to pull out.

Cheers,
Probert.

Only going off a game but Sears Point looks like it could be a good GP Track
to race on :-)

Yeah, there's a dip through the Vale and a dip along Farm, but it's
hardly Spa, or Turkey, or Imola, or Brazil, or Japan...

No, back in 1986(?), not 2002.

Thank goodness for that protected forest.

It was '87, and I seem to remember the FIA Safety Delegate / Commission
declared the track as unsafe for F1. Unfortunately there's not much that can
now be done about it as where at least two of the gravel traps need to be
extended there's now a very large housing estate.

Cheers,
Probert.

Better safety facilities and runoff areas are fine by me. As long as
they didn't touch the track layout itself...
