The Red Bull Racing team confirmed that Californian Scott Speed
will be one of the team’s official drivers beginning next year,
marking the first time an American driver has had a full-time
contract with a Formula 1 squad since Michael Andretti’s 1993
stint with McLaren.

Supported by the energy drinks company since being selected by
Red Bull’s “Driver Search” program two years ago, Speed currently
lies third in the GP2 Series’ point standings, where his iSport
machine carries the Austrian firm’s sponsorship.

"Obviously, I'm extremely pleased that Red Bull Racing has
decided to extend my contract," said the 22-year-old, who steered
RBR’s third Friday car at the Canadian and U.S. Grands Prix this
summer. "This season has been very good for me and to take this
step forward with Red Bull Racing for next year and hopefully
beyond is a great opportunity.”
