(Datsun is alleged to be "son of DAT" [their first car]) I think the Nissan Cedric has to be the most amusing... it sounds like a pensioner in a string vest. Then again it's one of that class of big and old-fashioned Japanese luxury cars that don't really get imported into Europe... |

I had meant to ask what you were driving in your teens. Datsun 140Y, I loved that car! Good grief - the car that prompted CAR magazine to characterize it thus: "Y indeed!. Doc It was a fantastic car, red with a black roof, I put a sticker on the back "injection", that was back in the days when I was stupid! I wonder why they used Datsun back then in stead of Nissan? They were going to launch their new car, and needed a commercially viable name for it in the export markets. With the success of Volkswagen, it made sense to phone the wizards of Wolfsburg for a suggestion regarding a suitable name. So Nissan presented their request over a crackly telephone line to the Germans, emphasizing that they needed a name for their new car in less than a week...to which the Germans replied :" You need ze name dat soon?" You had me there!! Doc I know that in Japan Datsun are the commercial vehicles. Yes I've noticed that, I was just wondering why they chose to use it for their cars in the UK? By the way, do you know the story about the Mitsubishi starion? Apparently it should have been called "stallion" but there was a misunderstanding in a phone conversation between Tokyo and America! My personal favourite Japanese car name is the Nissan Gloria!! |

3734 lb -- not quite 2 tons. But when you've got 617 hp, who cares? Those of us who enjoy cornering and appreciate agility in braking as well, just might care. Gimme an Elise any day... |
