Default Indy 2007 - 04-16-2007 , 09:35 AM

Taking my girls (7, 9 and 49 yrs old) to F1. Never been at Indy, I
gather that J is one of the best sections? Any advice/tickets/passes
to get the girls close to some F1 cars? I had the luck to tour
Maranello was I was a kid and would like to make it special for the
girls. Any tips would be great!

earplugs for the little ones is a must. You might even consider proper
headphone-type ear protectors. You can get child-sized ones. I have seen
kids wearing them at Grands Prix before.

Can't tell you anything about Indy specifically (the GP), but, I know if
I were there, I would definitely pay a vist to the motor racing museum
at the speedway. It is reputed to be excellent.

Take food and drinks with you (if the land of the free permits such
things), or a huge wad of cash.

Sunscreen and a hat, too. You might find yourselves stuck in one place
for many many hours. I got sunburned as hell at the Adelaide GP one
year, but there was no way I was giving up that vantage point for shade!

Enjoy it too, and post jpegs if you can!

Get a camping parking pass, even if you're driving in each day. You get
to park closer, and you get 2X the space, which is great if you plan to
hang out before or after the race on Sunday. We set up our lawn chairs
& BBQ grill and enjoy the view.

Great to know that they have a liking for cars / F1! :-)

Seriously;

You have to pretend youve really noticed that yellow flag. Remember what
Mika Hakkinen used to do: he used to put his hand out of the cockpit to
say, Yeah, Ive seen it, but keep his foot hard on the throttle pedal.

If you can make it to the track Thursday before the race, the pits are open
to the public to walk through. The garages should mostly be open to look
in but expect a fence to keep people about 15-20 feet away.
For the practice sessions on Friday, there are earth mounds for spectators
in the infield that are fairly close to the track.
From section J you have a view of a good length of the track, but you will
be quite a distance from it, having to look beyond the oval track (300 to
1000 feet away). Binoculars might come in handy.
