Posting that history was an excellent idea. Simply looking at the
list is an education. At so many stages the question "WHY?" seems
unanswerable.

For instance, "safety" as a reason for changing engine reg's has
never made sense to me. The 4500cc limit in 1950 seems perfectly
sane, and I imagine today's engineers could produce a nice powerful
atmospheric motor that would live long. What is the math regarding
displacement? Doesn't a big-inch motor necessarily rev slower than a
smaller one? (Top fuel engines, despite a flat-out design life of
about 10 seconds, and with supercharging, never exceed 8000rpm.)

I like one poster's suggestion about "all-weather" road style treaded
tires, if they won't give us slicks. Someone remind me why slicks
were "bad" for racing or safety or spectacle?
